The Dark Truth: You Don’t Need Motivation
One of the most devastating beliefs people hold is this:
“I need to feel motivated in order to do something.”
We’ve all been taught that emotions like excitement, passion, or drive are required to take action. That if we don’t feel like it, we shouldn’t do it—or worse, that we can’t do it.
But here’s the truth: you contradict that belief almost every single day.
Think about it. Do you go to work because you love going to work, or because you know that without money and resources, life is going to get tough? Do you brush your teeth because you’re excited about dental hygiene? Do you eat even when you’re not that hungry, simply because your body needs fuel?
Every single day, you do things without motivation. You act because of necessity, discipline, or a deeper sense of rightness—not because of a feeling.
The Myth of Motivation
Motivation is treated like some magical fuel—if you don’t have it, you can’t get started. But that’s simply not true.
The belief that you need to feel like doing something in order to do it is what holds you back, not the absence of motivation itself.
Feeling “unmotivated” is really just believing the lie that motivation is required. If you’re alive, breathing, and able to think, then you’re capable of doing. Period.
Of course, being pumped up or excited might make the experience more enjoyable and improve your performance. But to live a “good enough” life—one free from procrastination—you don’t need motivation. What you need is the understanding that action does not depend on feelings.
Good Enough vs. Perfection
Here’s the catch: a life without procrastination doesn’t mean a life of perfect performance.
Too many people sabotage themselves with the belief that everything they do must be flawless. That if they can’t do it perfectly, they shouldn’t do it at all.
But “good enough” and “exceptional” are worlds apart. You can live a life where you always take action, even if that action isn’t 100% perfect every time.
When you accept that, you free yourself from the paralysis of perfectionism. You realize you don’t need to do it all, you don’t need to do it well, you don’t even need to succeed. You just need to do something.
The Gun-to-the-Head Test
Here’s a simple way to prove this point.
Imagine someone put a gun to your head (or to your loved one’s head) and told you to do the thing you’ve been avoiding—whether it’s filing taxes, going to the gym, or making that difficult phone call.
Would you do it? Of course you would.
That proves you already have the capability. You’re not missing anything. The only difference is urgency. The truth is, you could act without motivation at any time—you just usually choose not to.
So, why not live as if there’s a gun to your head?
Not in a panicked or fearful way, but with the recognition that if it really mattered, you could do it. You don’t need to feel like it—you just need to start.
Start Small, Then Momentum Builds
The irony is this: motivation doesn’t come before action. It comes from action.
If you’re avoiding a big task—say, a complicated tax problem—you don’t need to tackle it all at once. Just do two minutes of it. Open the form. Read a single page. Take the smallest possible step.
Once you’re in motion, momentum takes over.
It’s the same with exercise. I rarely feel like going to the gym. At my core, I’m actually a lazy person. But I’ve learned that if I just commit to doing a warm-up—maybe a few stretches or a light jog—my body shifts gears. Suddenly, I want to keep going.
Before I started, I had zero motivation. After I began, motivation appeared out of nowhere. That’s the paradox: you don’t wait for motivation to act—you act to create motivation.
Pattern Breaking
One trick I use is pattern breaking.
When you really don’t feel like doing something, force yourself into a tiny, random action just to disrupt the “I don’t wanna” cycle. Do three squats. Brush your teeth again. Walk to the bathroom and back.
It doesn’t matter what it is—the point is to prove to yourself that you can act without feeling like it.
Once you’ve broken the pattern, it’s much easier to slide into the action you were avoiding. That one small step takes you from zero to one, and that’s all you need to build momentum.
Adjusting Expectations
Now, let’s be real.
If you’re exhausted, stressed, or just plain run down, your performance will probably dip. If I drag myself to the gym tired, I won’t lift as much. But here’s the key: I still go.
I don’t pressure myself to perform at my peak. I just accept that “good enough” is enough. That mindset prevents me from falling into procrastination.
Because doing something—even poorly—is infinitely better than doing nothing.
Zero Procrastination is Possible
Here’s the liberating truth: you can live a life with zero procrastination.
Not a life of perfect results. Not a life of flawless execution. But a life where you always take some action, no matter how small, instead of stalling and waiting for a magical feeling.
It’s entirely possible. And it’s much simpler than you think.
The Bottom Line
Motivation is optional.
Action is always available.
If you stop waiting for the right feelings, you’ll discover that you can do almost anything you put your mind to. You don’t need to feel confident to act confident. You don’t need to feel motivated to take action. You just need to start.
So the next time you’re sitting around waiting for motivation to appear, remember: it won’t come first. Action comes first.
Do something small. Break the pattern. Take one step. Motivation will follow.

One Response
One thing I’ve been putting off because I “don’t feel like it”:
Taking active steps to move out of my current position (and workplace), and move towards begin self-employed, or at the very least be doing something that I actually interests me, that I’m good at, in an environment that aligns with my values and I feel that I can be authentic and not wear the corporate mask.
I was reading a journal from 8 years ago – it’s pretty much all the same stuff in terms of work – different city, different workplace… but same still the same role. Funny how things need to get to a crisis point before acting.
