After studying psychology for over 20 years, I’ve finally formed a cohesive picture of what it means to be a human. And I think it can be best summarised in an image.

The Self
The man pulling the cart is the You you feel you are; call it consciousness, awareness, self, ego, identity. It goes by many names, but it’s the thing you’re referring to when you say “I am…”
This Self is almost completely unaware that he is pulling a cart. In fact, because he’s been pulling this cart since his first memories began, the cart feels like a mere extension of himself. He IS the cart. Because he has no awareness of the cart, he never considers the possibility that the cart has a Driver.
The Driver
The cart Driver is the controlling force; the secret puppet-master. He is the one that steers the cart, decides which direction it will take, what goals it will pursue, and what threats it will avoid.
However, because the Driver sits upon the cart, he cannot control it directly. He lacks the power to make it go forward. There are no steering wheels or levers. So the Driver must manipulate the Self into pulling the cart in order for him to control the cart’s movement.
The Carrot and The Whip
Like any animal, the Self is controlled easily by two main mechanisms: the carrot and the whip – the promise of reward, and the sting of punishment. By dangling the carrot just out of reach, the Driver is able to tempt the Self into trying to lean forward to bite the carrot, thereby pulling the cart forward. By swinging the carrot left and right, the Driver can also steer the cart.
If, for whatever reason, the Self is uninterested in the carrot, the Driver resorts to the whip. Where the carrot is really just the illusion of reward (the Self is never allowed more than a mere taste and can never satisfy his hunger), the whip is very much real. Its sting causes measurable pain.
Interpretation
Let’s unpack this metaphor in case it’s not obvious.
Most people will go through their entire lives thinking they are only the Self. They will have no awareness of a cart or a Driver. And because they consider themselves to be a single unit of one, they automatically attribute all inner decisions to be their own. If you swing to the left, it must be because the Self wanted to go left. If you stop, it must be because the Self wanted to stop. There is no sense of being manipulated.
The carrot feels like the Self’s goal. Rarely, does the Self stop and ask, “Why am I always chasing this carrot? Why does chasing it never satisfy my hunger for more than a moment?” People chase after goals and dreams – the common ones being wealth, love, happiness, possessions, emotional highs, belonging, and power – and yet rarely question their motives for doing so.
We think that we choose to chase these things, and yet where did we get the idea that these were good things to chase? And why do we keep chasing after we attain them – never satisfied, never feeling complete?
The Self works himself to the bone trying to score a promotion at work. He finally gets it, celebrates for about five minutes, and then immediately feels the empty hunger resurface. “Now what?” he wonders, and before long a new carrot dangles in front of him: an even bigger promotion; a new house; starting his own business etc. Within days he’s chasing after a new goal as if it’s necessary, whereas before he thought he would be satisfied with the latest promotion.
When the Self rebels and thinks, “Fuck this, I’m taking a break,” the Driver – call it the brain, subconsciousness, the Great Unknown – withdraws the whip. The lash flicks down with a painful sting: guilt; fear of missing out; catastrophizing; memories of past failures; fear of dying alone; certainty that other people are judging you; stress; a sense of being “behind” everyone else.
The whip goads the Self into leaping forward, blindly, trying to run away from the pain. Even more than the carrot of possible success, the pain of self-loathing, fear and failure is far more potent in controlling our behaviour. We’d do just about anything to end the pain, even if only for a moment. Whether it’s reaching for a bottle of alcohol, scrolling on a phone, people pleasing, texting our toxic ex – we welcome anything that numbs and soothes.
The Obvious Manipulation
The idea that we’re being played like fools by a hidden force that lurks just outside our range of vision almost never occurs to us. We’re so attached to the idea of free will and independence that we don’t want to even consider other possibilities.
And yet the evidence of the Driver is blatantly obvious. But to see him, we must first let go of the idea that the Self is all there is.
If you are a single unit of one, just the Self, then how do you explain arguments inside your head? How do you explain the obvious truth that one part of you creates thoughts, and another part of you observes them? How can “you” be a single Self if one part of you generates emotions, while another part of you experiences them?
What about self-sabotage? We so often know the right thing to do, e.g. eat healthy, and then do the easy thing instead, e.g. snack on comfort food. How do you explain this contradiction? A single unit cannot contradict itself. You’d need at least two different forces with different beliefs and opposing goals.
A thought enters your head – “I wish I just made more money”. And yet you’ve never been rich before, so how are you so sure it’s right for you?
You feel a surge of attraction towards a woman and think, “I wish she was my girlfriend,” and yet you’ve never been in a relationship with her. So why are you so sure she’s a good person to pursue? Think of how many women are attracted to serial killers – how can a sensible Self “want” something without knowing what it’s like? That’s like saying, “I love the taste of avocado” when you’ve never tried it before.
Creating vs Receiving
These urges, suggestions, commands and worries enter our minds, and then we tell ourselves “I thought that,” as if the Self created the thing that it’s observing. Except the Self is unaware of the thought/urge/feeling until after it’s already occurred. We don’t witness the creation, we receive the finished product! So where did it come from?
When you think, “I’m such a loser” after getting rejected by someone – that whip of shame that comes after a failed attempt at something – whose hand holds the whip? You received that painful thought; you didn’t create it. Therefore, it must have come from somewhere else.
It should be obvious to you. You’re not alone! There is something else dangling out of sight, hiding in your blind spot, and sending you temptations and punishments to manipulate your behaviour.
Why Is Life So Hard?
You think there’s no cart? Then why are you so weary? Stop for a moment, and just notice the burden you’re carrying. The pressure, the stress, the endless to-do lists and demands and goals. Nothing’s ever good enough; nothing ever really feels finished. It’s hard to rest without feeling guilty. Such a weight on your shoulders.
Think of the relief you feel when you’re on holiday – the few times in your life where you get to put the cart down and do what you really want to do. Why do you feel relief if not for having to carry something heavy the rest of the time? It’s like putting down a heavy backpack after a long hike.
Think about every goal – carrot – you’ve ever chased. Notice how you never get more than a lick of enjoyment from succeeding before another goal is cast in front of you. Sometimes even achieving the goal does nothing; your mind – the Driver – often dismisses your successes with, “Yeah, but…”. It wasn’t fast enough, or clever enough, or you didn’t feel the way you should, or nobody appreciated it, etc. Sometimes you never even get to lick the carrot.
The Driver is Controlling You
The Driver knows that if he dangles a carrot in front of you – the thoughts and feelings associated with wanting something – you (the Self) will take credit for the idea. He knows you’ll claim his goal as your own, and so have no awareness of what you really want.
You can see it when other people do this. Someone gets a random idea in their head, and it immediately goes to the top of their to-do list with zero question or due diligence. Look how quickly people jump on the bandwagon of the latest trends; how quickly they panic and sell shares when the news threatens a recession; how mindlessly they add to their workload without qualifying a task’s relevance to business success.
The Self thinks, “I think, therefore I am,” and takes this to mean every thought and feeling must be taken seriously and obeyed. But if the Self was to realise, “I think, therefore some bastard is trying to trick me,” he might not be so quick to jump when he hears a voice shout “Frog!”
The True Power
The beauty of all this – though very few humans will ever discover this – is that the Self is the true power controlling the cart. Ironically, the Driver requires the Self to believe he is in control, but to also not be aware that he’s being manipulated. So a Self thinking he’s all alone in making decisions is a slave to the Driver, but a Self realizing he’s being manipulated can escape this slavery and make decisions for himself.
And no matter who you are, you’ve had small moments of freedom, a few times at least. The Driver hasn’t always gotten his way. There have been times when you said No to a powerful temptation because you knew it was unhealthy, and there are times you said Yes to a terrifying behaviour because you knew it was right.
Sadly, for many of you, this will be a rare experience. The rest of the time, you chase the carrot and fear the whip, and this makes most of your decisions.
Stop And Question
Stop and look at the fundamentals of your life, and ask “Why”
Why this job? Why live in this city? Why did you eat what you ate for lunch today? Why do you pursue some social opportunities but not others, some hobbies but not others? Do you even know the answers?
Of course, answers will come up for you. But whose answers are they? When you justify having McDonald’s for lunch – even though you know it’s unhealthy – where does the explanation come from? That voice that says, “Well, I was in a rush, and it was convenient, and I deserve a treat because it’s been a hard week…” – why do you immediately accept this answer as if it’s your own?
The Driver doesn’t want you to be sceptical about the source of these commands and excuses and distractions, because he doesn’t want you to realise that he’s lying to you.
You didn’t eat McDonalds for all those bullshit reasons! You ate it to suffocate emotion and avoid hassle and maintain a familiar identity. Your Driver failed to mention those reasons, didn’t he? He didn’t think you could handle the truth – that most of what you do has nothing to do with your ideas around health, happiness, and living a good life.
Because the Driver has much darker intentions.
You Suffer For A Reason
The Driver doesn’t care if you suffer; indeed, he is the cause of most of your suffering. The Outside World occasionally hurts you, while the Driver abuses you on a daily basis. It’s not the Outside punishing you with painful memories, stress, anxiety, fear, self-doubt, self-loathing, catastrophizing, guilt-trips, panic and loneliness. That’s all the Driver.
The Driver is willing to torture you all day, every day, so long as you go along with his secret agenda:
To Stay The Same.
He doesn’t want “success”, because success means change. Notice how he encourages you to repeat mistakes, but discourages you to try something new that you know will be good for you? Isn’t it obvious? What kind of friend would do that? As the old saying goes, Who doesn’t enjoy watching a friend fail? Your Driver wants failure, because that means staying in the familiar.
You repeatedly do self-sabotaging, pointless, painful and damaging actions because that’s what you usually do. The Driver uses the carrot and the whip to drive you in circles. The same old relationship patterns; the same thoughtless career moves; the same mindless obedience to your family’s guilt-trips. So long as it’s known, it gets encouraged.
So you have to start wondering: How long do I want to remain a slave?

Being “nice” still isn’t working, is it?
You try to please everyone – partner, boss, friends, kids – and then secretly resent them for holding you back, even though you know it’s really your lack of boundaries and assertiveness. Relationships feel tense or flat. Your job pays the bills but feels like a soul‑draining compromise.
You censor what you really think and feel, swallow frustration, and end up with resentment, anxiety, and occasional bursts of anger that scare you. You worry that one day you’ll either explode at someone you love or collapse into anxious depression and give up on yourself.
You lie awake wondering if you’re destined to always be the “nice guy” who’s never truly respected.
That’s exactly where many of my clients started. Now they speak their minds calmly on the spot, stand up to high‑status people without blinking, build deep, honest relationships, and live according to their values rather than guilt and fear.
This coaching offer is designed to help you make that same shift with a clear, concrete roadmap… and without any high-pressure sales calls.
The Outcome
In the next 90 days, you’ll build the foundations of unshakeable integrity and social confidence so you can speak your mind, set firm boundaries, and stop people‑pleasing – without destroying your relationships or reputation.
By the end of this program, you will:
✅Have a clear personal code of values and standards so you know exactly what “living with integrity” means in practical, everyday decisions.
✅Be able to say what you really think and feel – even when it’s uncomfortable – in your relationship, at work, and with friends, without panicking about what others think.
✅Establish and enforce healthy boundaries so people stop walking over you, and you stop over‑delivering, over‑apologising, and over‑explaining.
✅Replace guilt, shame, and anxiety with grounded self‑respect, so you feel worthy of the life you actually want rather than settling.
The Mentorship Roadmap (3 phases)
Here’s exactly how we’ll create those results, step by step.
Phase 1 – Integrity Blueprint: Who you really are
- We map out your current Nice Guy patterns: people‑pleasing, conflict avoidance, dishonesty, over‑giving, sexual shame, and hidden resentment.
- You define your core values and non‑negotiable standards – your Integrity Blueprint – so you finally know what “being a good man” means for you, not for everyone else.
- You get simple, real‑life exercises to start acting in alignment with this blueprint immediately (micro honesty, small confrontations, tiny acts of self‑respect).
✅Result of Phase 1: You stop feeling confused and start feeling clear – you know what the “right thing” is in tough situations, and have a blueprint to guide your behaviour.
Phase 2 – Courage and Communication: Saying what needs to be said
- You learn practical communication tools to speak your mind respectfully: honest disclosures, clean confrontations, boundary statements, and “no” without guilt.
- We prepare and debrief real conversations from your life (partner, boss, family), so you’re not just learning theory – you’re dealing with real situations and upgrading them.
- You gradually face emotionally difficult situations – disagreements, criticism, saying “no” – in a controlled way that builds confidence rather than overwhelming you.
✅Result of Phase 2: You can have uncomfortable conversations without panicking, freezing, or lashing out. People start to see you as calm, honest, and respectable instead of “nice but weak”.
Phase 3 – Lifestyle Integration: Living as a confident, respected man
- We redesign your daily routines, relationship habits, and social life to match your Integrity Blueprint: how you work, rest, connect, and pursue goals.
- You create a realistic, sustainable action plan for the next 6–12 months so that the changes stick instead of fading once coaching ends.
- We address the predictable resistance – from your own fear as well as from other people – and install strategies so you don’t relapse into old Nice Guy habits when things get tough.
✅Result of Phase 3: You’re no longer “doing a program”; you’ve become a different kind of man – one who leads with integrity, stands his ground, and builds relationships based on honesty instead of approval‑seeking.

Testimonials
You can read independent reviews from my coaching clients on Google here
Typical experiences for my clients (no promises – this is just what happened for them):
▶️Andy went from catastrophizing all the time about what his workmates and neighbours thought of him, to simply no longer caring about what anyone thought of him. Ever. This allowed him to finally start a side-hustle that he’d wanted to do for decades.
▶️Daniel cheated on his wife. She was about to divorce him. We repaired his marriage by learning to express his emotions clearly, set boundaries, and get over his fear of missing out. Now they’re stronger than ever before. And I helped him start his own business.
▶️Simon was a 30 year old virgin who could only get into the friendzone. He’s now married with two children, and is totally honest in the relationship.
▶️Tony was devastated after his wife of 8 years suddenly left him for another man after getting sick of his people pleasing. Now he’s travelling the world and dating amazing women that he once thought were out of his league. The people pleasing has stopped.
▶️Ian was terrified of commitment of any kind because deep down he thought he wasn’t good enough. He’s now married and expecting his first child, and he found the courage to go all in on his own business.
▶️Vince was constantly getting into pointless conflicts with his wife, and losing her respect. Now they’re a solid team, and she looks up to him as a man who can maintain boundaries without losing control.
▶️Jerry was still living at home in his late 20s, absolutely dominated by his controlling parents. His work colleagues bullied and controlled him too. He’s now living on his own, can approach and connect with beautiful women without fear, and is respected and known as someone you do not mess with at work.

FAQ
Who is this coaching really for, and how do I know if I’m a good fit?
The best fit for this program is a man who identifies as being Mr Nice Guy and/or a people pleaser, is dedicated to becoming more confident and authentic, and is willing to get uncomfortable trying some new behaviours.
What specific changes or results can I realistically expect in 90 days?
This obviously depends on your courage and what kind of trauma etc. holds you back, but you can reasonably expect to figure out your Nice Guy sabotaging beliefs and behaviours, fix the worst of them, feel confidence growing, know what your Core Values are and how to live by them, and learn how to create healthy relationships within 90 days. After that it’s just practice and repetition.
How is this different from therapy, books, or free confidence content online?
I will get inside your head for your specific needs, challenges and goals. I’m like a mental mechanic, I will help you pull yourself apart and put it all back together to function much more effectively. You can try doing this on your own too, just expect it to take years instead of months due to being unable to see your own blind spots.
What happens after I sign up – what’s the onboarding and session process like without a sales call?
After you’ve enrolled, you’ll be sent a link to book in your first session and you’ll receive an email with all links, bonuses and other information needed. During our first session the rest will be made clear. I have times available for anywhere in the world, and you can contact me if there’s an issue with finding a good time – we’ll make something work.
How much time per week will this require, and can it work with my job/family schedule?
Apart from the weekly coaching session, our work will be designed to integrate with your life. Your “homework” tasks will involve real-life situations, not extra work on top of your everyday activities. You already have enough time.
What if I do the work but don’t get results – do you have any kind of guarantee or safety net?
I can’t guarantee that you’ll do the work, I can only guarantee that I will deliver expert coaching built on a solid foundation of formal education, practical training, and decades of experience. I can guarantee that I have implemented all of this into my own life for incredible results. I can guarantee that nearly all of my clients who have courageously taken action have achieved results above and beyond their expectations. If you have a history of investing without doing the work, however, this is not for you.
How confidential are our sessions and messages, especially around sensitive topics like sex, shame, or trauma?
Highly confidential. The information won’t be shared with anyone without your permission. Calls are recorded for you, but only you and I will have access to the recordings.
What is your coaching style and philosophy – will I resonate with your direct, integrity‑based approach?
My style is straight to the point. I won’t be hard on you, but I will be honest. I will focus on pointing out the contradictions in your beliefs, and help you to take responsibility for your actions. I won’t allow you to play the victim and blame others for your choices or results. If you don’t want to take full responsibility for your life, I can’t help you.
What happens after the 90 days – can I continue, join a community, or move into more advanced coaching?
Some of my clients continue with more advanced coaching because they want to become insanely confident. Many of my clients continue with light-touch maintenance coaching (e.g. one session per month) to make sure they keep their progress going. Others continue with the Brojo community, using the courses and my books to stay on track. And some clients simply don’t need me at all any more and go off on their own.
