This is an excerpt from my course: Advanced Motivation Techniques
Understanding Motivation: The Key to Sustained Action
Motivation is often seen as a mystical force, something that some people are lucky to have while others struggle with. But what if I told you that motivation is not a matter of luck or fate? Instead, it’s something you can control, manage, and build. Let’s explore the mechanics of motivation, the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, and how you can harness them to keep your motivation levels high.
Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation
Motivation can broadly be categorized into two types: intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external).
Intrinsic Motivation: This comes from within you. It’s driven by your beliefs, values, goals, and internal rewards. It’s the type of motivation that keeps you going because you want to, not because someone else is pushing you.
Extrinsic Motivation: This is driven by external factors such as rewards, recognition, or avoiding negative outcomes. Think of a paycheck for a job, approval from others, or even how you look in the mirror.
*Studies show that intrinsic motivation is far more powerful and sustainable than extrinsic motivation (citation below). When your actions align with your internal beliefs and values, you’re more likely to stay committed and driven.

Building Intrinsic Motivation
The key to sustained motivation is building it from within. Ask yourself, “How can I make myself want to do this for my own reasons?” The more you align your actions with your personal values and beliefs, the less you’ll need external incentives.
Many people mistakenly believe that motivation is about feeling good—feeling brave, inspired, or passionate. While positive emotions can boost motivation, they’re not necessary. You’ve likely done important tasks without feeling motivated, like going to work or exercising when you didn’t feel like it. This shows that you can act without relying on supportive emotions.
Motivation vs. Procrastination
Procrastination, or delaying action, often feels like a mystery. But it’s simply a problem to be solved. Think of motivation as an equation: certain elements contribute to motivation, while others lead to procrastination.
Identify what leads to your procrastination and what fuels your motivation. By understanding and manipulating these elements, you can overcome procrastination and enhance your motivation.
Motivation Is Not Luck
Many people view motivation as a product of good luck or favorable circumstances. If someone is motivated, they’re seen as lucky, while those who struggle are seen as victims of fate. But motivation is a flexible concept that you can influence anytime.
You don’t need good luck or perfect conditions to be motivated. You need to understand the motivational equation and learn how to change it. No matter your current thoughts or feelings, you’re always in control of your behavior. Motivation is measured by what you do, not what you think or feel.
The Carrot and the Stick
Another way to think about motivation is the classic “carrot and stick” approach—moving towards something you want (the carrot) and away from something you don’t want (the stick). Combine these to create a powerful force that drives your behavior.
Ask yourself:
- What do I want for myself?
- What do I want to avoid?
By focusing on these intrinsic motivators, you create a magnetic force that pulls you towards your goals and pushes you away from undesirable outcomes.
Turning Motivation into Habit
Sustained motivation leads to ambition—a state where high motivation becomes your default setting. The goal is to maintain consistent motivation until it becomes a habit, your autopilot mode.
If you struggle with fluctuating or nonexistent motivation, this course will provide you with the tools to keep your motivation high. Over time, your brain will adjust, making sustained motivation your new norm.
Personal Experience: A Journey to Constant Motivation
From personal experience, I can attest that consistent motivation is achievable. There was a time when getting out of bed was a struggle. Now, even on my off days, I can still accomplish important tasks. This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It required manual effort to change my motivational equation, bringing myself up when I was down until it became a habit.
Conclusion
Motivation is not a mystical force or a matter of luck. It’s a manageable, flexible concept that you can control. By understanding the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, learning to build motivation from within, and viewing it as an equation to solve, you can sustain high motivation levels and turn it into a habit.
Remember, motivation is measured by what you do, not what you feel. With the right mindset and tools, you can overcome procrastination, stay motivated, and achieve your goals. This course is here to guide you through that process, helping you build and maintain constant motivation until it becomes second nature.
