What Does Real Confidence Look Like?
I’ve had this question come up a lot: What does confidence actually look like? How will you know when you’re confident? How can you tell when someone else is?
It’s a great question because, when I was younger, I assumed almost everyone else was confident except me. I thought I was broken in some way, stuck at the bottom of the pack while everyone else cruised through life.
After a decade of self-development, I’ve reached the opposite conclusion: Most people are not confident at all. They’re plagued by insecurities, ruled by fear, and make most of their decisions based on avoiding discomfort rather than living with integrity. Most people put on a show to appear confident, but deep down, they’re faking it.
So, what does real confidence look like? What are the principles of truly confident people? And how can you avoid mistaking arrogance or dominance for actual confidence?

The Principles of True Confidence
Confidence isn’t about being the loudest in the room or winning every argument. It’s not about appearing flawless or never showing weakness. Instead, here are the key traits of genuinely confident people:
1. They Sacrifice Outcomes for Integrity
Confident people prioritize doing what’s right over winning. Take Nelson Mandela—he could have taken the easy route, but he chose to spend nearly 30 years in prison to stand up for his beliefs. True confidence means being willing to lose in the short term to uphold your values.
2. They Are Willing to Appear Weak
Confidence isn’t about hiding flaws—it’s about embracing them. A truly confident person doesn’t mind looking “weak” because they don’t define themselves by others’ judgments. They don’t pretend to be unaffected by things, and they don’t suppress emotions to maintain an illusion of strength.
3. They Are Consistent and Predictable
Confident people don’t shock you with betrayals or hypocrisy. They have a steady, predictable way of reacting to the world. Their values remain intact even when it costs them something. They aren’t driven by public opinion or popularity—they are who they are, regardless of external validation.
4. They Lead by Example, Not Words
As Marcus Aurelius said, “Stop arguing about what a good man is. Be one.” Confident people don’t try to convince others of their greatness—they simply live in alignment with their values. If you need to tell people how confident you are, you probably aren’t.
5. They Are Comfortable with Being Wrong
Confident people are open to learning and improving. They aren’t locked into their own beliefs out of fear of appearing weak. You see this in figures like Jordan Peterson, who, even in heated debates, will stop, think, and sometimes say, “You know what, you got me there.” That willingness to adjust and upgrade is a sign of true security.
6. They Control Themselves, Not Others
A confident person focuses on their own growth rather than trying to dominate others. They don’t let people walk all over them, but they also don’t seek to control or manipulate anyone else. Live and let live is their mindset.
7. They Choose Growth Over Comfort
Confident people are willing to suffer for long-term growth. They don’t chase instant gratification; instead, they take on challenges that help them become stronger. David Goggins is a great example—he turned his suffering into a tool for resilience and growth.
8. They Manage Their Health Well
Confidence isn’t about having six-pack abs—it’s about respecting your body and mind. Confident people take care of themselves, whether that means seeking therapy when needed, exercising, or addressing health issues instead of ignoring them.
9. They Express Their Emotions Without Shame
Confident people don’t suppress emotions or drown in them. They experience sadness, fear, anger, and joy equally, without ranking them as “good” or “bad.” They don’t hide their struggles, but they also don’t wallow in them.
The Illusion of Confidence: “Fool’s Gold”
Not everything that looks like confidence actually is. Here are some things people often mistake for confidence, but in reality, indicate deep insecurity:
1. Good Looks and a Smooth Image
Looking polished and attractive isn’t a sign of confidence. If someone puts excessive effort into their appearance but can’t handle being seen looking “less than perfect,” that’s insecurity.
2. Hedonism and Partying
A person who always needs external stimulation—parties, drugs, drinking, constant entertainment—is often avoiding deep discomfort within themselves. Confidence is about being at peace, not escaping.
3. Grandiosity and Boasting
People who brag about their success or constantly try to prove their superiority are the opposite of confident. Confident people don’t need external approval—they already know their worth.
4. Dominance and Bullying
People who try to intimidate or control others are deeply insecure. True confidence doesn’t need to put others down to feel strong.
5. The “Always Winning” Mindset
Being successful doesn’t mean someone is confident. Many high-achievers are driven by insecurity, constantly chasing the next win because they don’t feel like they’re enough as they are.
True Confidence in Action: Role Models
Here are some high-profile figures who exemplify real confidence:
1. Brené Brown – A researcher who teaches vulnerability and shamelessness as key aspects of confidence.
2. Jim Carrey – He admitted that his entire career persona was a mask and has since embraced a more authentic, vulnerable approach to life.
3. Jordan Peterson – Love him or hate him, he demonstrates confidence by prioritizing truth over winning debates and remaining composed even under attack.
4. David Goggins – The embodiment of resilience, he transformed himself through suffering and personal responsibility.
Defining Confidence for Yourself
At the end of the day, confidence isn’t about comparing yourself to others. It’s about living by a set of principles that make you feel self-respect and fulfillment. It’s about:
- Accepting yourself fully, flaws and all
- Taking responsibility for your own happiness
- Choosing long-term integrity over short-term approval
- Being open to learning and change
- Living your values consistently, whether people approve or not
True confidence isn’t loud, flashy, or obsessed with winning. It’s steady, resilient, and completely free from the need for external validation. And once you have it, you won’t need anyone else to confirm it for you.
