The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying: How to Avoid Them
What’s up, everyone? Today, I’m diving into a topic that doesn’t get enough attention—regrets from people on their deathbeds. These are regrets they’ve shared as they face their final moments, and they offer powerful lessons for the rest of us.
I’ve been reflecting on these regrets a lot, particularly after reading The Top Five Regrets of the Dying by a palliative care nurse (I’ll find the name and drop it below). The idea that someone, looking back on their life, could have made different choices really strikes me. If we live with awareness, we can make sure we don’t reach the end of our lives and think, “I could’ve done this better.” Instead, we should aim for that moment where we can say, “Yep, that was a good life. I did my best.”
I’m going to go through these top five regrets and talk about how they show up in our lives, why we fall into them, and, most importantly, how to avoid them.
1. I Wish I’d Had the Courage to Live a Life True to Myself, Not the Life Others Expected of Me
This one hits home, and it’s the foundation of my work. It all boils down to integrity—living in a way that’s true to yourself, not seeking approval or validation from others.
The thing is, most of us are deeply conditioned to seek approval. Our careers, relationships, even our choices about where we live or what we wear, often stem from what others expect of us. Society, parents, peers—everyone has some idea of what we should be doing, and it’s so easy to slip into these expectations without even realizing it.
Take a step back and think about it: Is your life really yours? Are you living for you, or to meet the unspoken approval of others? If you’re reading this, chances are, you’re probably doing some of this already. You might be in a job or relationship that doesn’t feel right, simply because it’s what others think you should do.
This happens because we’re conditioned from an early age—think school, social norms, parents pushing you into certain directions. You’re programmed to seek approval, and it becomes your default mode.
But you don’t have to keep living like this. You have the power to ask yourself: Why am I doing this? What would I be doing differently if I wasn’t worried about judgment or fitting in?
Take a good look at your life. Is it aligned with your values, or are you sacrificing them just to keep others happy? If you find you’re living to meet others’ expectations, it’s time to stop and consider the road less traveled. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but trust me, it’s worth it. Choose the life that aligns with who you really are.
2. I Wish I Hadn’t Worked So Hard
Let’s talk about work. We’re all guilty of this—working ourselves to the bone, whether it’s for a paycheck, social status, or just staying busy to feel productive. Many of us are grinding away, often working 40, 50, 60, even 70-hour weeks, and still finding ourselves feeling unsatisfied. We burn out. We get stressed. We’re constantly working, but for what?
The biggest regret people have on their deathbeds isn’t “I wish I made more money.” It’s “I wish I had spent more time enjoying life, with the people I care about.” The reality is, most of us don’t need to work as much as we do to get by. We get caught up in a cycle of achievement, not realizing that the ultimate goal—true fulfillment—doesn’t come from endless work.
Ask yourself: What’s the point of all this hard work? If your job is taking away your energy, health, or time with the people you love, is it really worth it? I’m not saying don’t work hard, but take a step back and assess if all the extra hours you’re putting in are actually bringing you any closer to happiness.
It’s time to reconsider your priorities. What would happen if you worked just enough to survive and then spent the rest of your time enjoying life? It’s all about balance. Don’t get to the end of your life and realize that you’ve missed out on the things that matter most.
3. I Wish I’d Had the Courage to Express My Feelings
This one is huge. You might think of yourself as an honest person, but how often do you keep your true feelings buried? If you’re not expressing your thoughts, feelings, and emotions openly, you’re lying—yes, even to yourself.
People on their deathbeds express deep regret over not having been more open, more honest. Sure, being emotionally honest can be uncomfortable, and yes, it can cause conflict. But at the end of the day, what’s worse? Holding onto all of those unspoken thoughts and feelings, or letting them out and facing whatever happens?
So, what’s holding you back? If you’re angry, say it. If you’re sad, express it. If you’re happy, show it. The fear of judgment or discomfort shouldn’t stop you from living authentically. By bottling up your emotions, you’re living a lie. Don’t let that be your legacy.
4. I Wish I’d Stayed in Touch with My Friends
This one speaks to the importance of maintaining meaningful relationships. How often do you prioritize work, busy schedules, or personal obligations over the people you care about? Most of us spend so much time chasing achievements or trying to meet others’ expectations that we neglect the relationships that matter most.
Think about this: the happiest people are those who have deep, loving relationships with friends, family, and partners. Not the people who are always chasing the next big thing. People regret not spending more time with their loved ones because, in the end, that’s what matters most.
How much time are you spending nurturing your relationships? Are you staying connected with the people who make your life richer and more meaningful? Don’t wait until it’s too late to make these connections a priority.
5. I Wish I Had Let Myself Be Happier
Here’s the last one, and it’s a little tricky. What people regret here isn’t the lack of happiness itself, but rather the inability to truly embrace all the emotions that make life rich. We get conditioned to put on a happy face, pretending everything is great, even when it’s not. But that’s not true happiness.
True happiness doesn’t mean being happy all the time. It’s about being honest with yourself and letting yourself feel whatever you’re feeling—whether that’s stress, anger, sadness, or joy. Trying to suppress negative emotions in favor of a fake “happy” mask is exhausting, and it’s not real happiness.
If you spend your whole life pretending to be happy, you’ll get to the end and realize that the emotional experiences you were trying to avoid weren’t that bad. They were part of the journey. The key is to let yourself feel everything without shame, without fear of judgment.
At the end of the day, the people who regret not being happier weren’t actually trying to be happy—they were trying to be “perfect.” Don’t make that mistake. Let yourself experience life as it comes, in all its messiness and beauty.
Conclusion: Live Without Regret
Looking at these five regrets, it’s clear that the key to avoiding them is living with intention. Don’t let your life be driven by external pressures or unexamined routines. Take a hard look at your choices, express yourself honestly, nurture your relationships, and don’t let work consume you.
You have the power to shape your life in a way that aligns with who you truly are. And if you make these changes now, you can avoid the regrets people face at the end of their lives.
So, as you move through your day-to-day, ask yourself: Am I living the life I want to live? It’s never too late to course-correct and make choices that will bring you true fulfillment.
I hope this helps, and if you’re looking for guidance in making these changes in your own life, don’t hesitate to reach out. Until next time—live intentionally!
