Think Keeping Sex Exciting Means Going More Extreme? Here’s What Couples Do Instead

A lot of men want their sex life to feel exciting again, then get stuck on one intimidating idea: the only way forward is up. Something wilder. More extreme. Preferably involving equipment you couldn’t explain to a delivery driver. Because you’re unsure she wants wilder (or you do), nothing happens. If that sounds familiar, relax. Most couples don’t keep sex thrilling by constantly outdoing themselves. BeMoreKinky is the world’s largest sex app for couples, giving it a good view of what couples actually do. The reality is less alarming than the bedroom assault course in your head.

The ladder myth

Plenty of men picture sex as a ladder. You start with the basics and apparently climb another rung every few months. Stay still and you’re boring; keep climbing and who knows where you end up. Except couples don’t behave like that. When app users planned sex over several weeks, their plans became fuller. The fifth included about 40% more activities than the first, but wasn’t more intense. Almost as many people drifted towards gentler ideas (23%) as harder ones (24%). The growth went sideways, not upwards.

Most of what gets added is small

What does “more” look like? Usually, something forgotten or never tried. The blindfold abandoned in the bedside drawer. The name she likes being called. That position you haven’t enjoyed in months. The role play you keep joking about but never do. None of this is extreme. Most could happen this weekend, without installing a suspension point in the ceiling.

The hardcore stuff wears off

People who returned to the harder ideas on the app said yes less often as time went on. On their first day with those ideas, about 40% received a yes. On later days, that fell to 35%. This makes sense to me. Wild ideas are fun to browse and fantasise about. Once you’ve seen the whole shelf, you become choosier. You know what genuinely turns you on, and what is better left as a filthy thought.

Guessing is the nice guy trap

Nice guys often hate asking. You would rather plan the perfect surprise than risk an awkward conversation. When it fails, you retreat, she wonders what happened, and sex quietly stalls again. Asking works better. Partners can set one another little tasks on the app. When tasks came from a partner, 74% completed at least one. For self-set tasks, it was 56%. A request from someone you fancy has more pull than a note to yourself. She chose it and she’ll know whether you’ve done it. A phone reminder can’t compete. It removes the pressure, too. Once she has told you what she wants, the mind-reading act can end. Tell her what you fancy too, and you’ve spared her the same exhausting guesswork. Asking isn’t unsexy; anxious guesswork is hardly an aphrodisiac.

What can you do about it?

  1. Stop trying to top last time. Add something small or different rather than automatically going bigger.
  2. Discover what’s on the table. Take a quick BDSM test with your partner and find overlapping answers. You may discover something neither dared mention.
  3. Resurrect an old favourite. List things you once enjoyed but stopped doing, then choose one for this week.
  4. Swap requests. Tell her one thing you want and invite one in return. Make it Friday, Tuesday, whenever works, but make it an actual day.
  5. A “no” is about that idea. It isn’t a verdict on you. Move sideways and explore something else on the list. You have my permission to get off the ridiculous ladder. Tonight, ask what she’d enjoy more of in bed, then share one of yours. Choose the easier option and do it this week. If you enjoy it, ask again next week. Exciting sex needs curiosity and two people willing to speak honestly, not ever-increasing extremes.
