Why Psychology Isn’t a Real Science (And What to Do Instead)
This might ruffle some feathers, but I’m going to say it anyway: Psychology is not a science. Not in the way medicine, neuroscience, astronomy, or mathematics are.
When you think of hard sciences, you think of precision. Neuroscience measures chemical balances in the brain using real tools—brain scans, blood tests, behavioral tracking. Astronomy can calculate the exact second a meteor will hit a planet. Medical science—give someone the wrong drug, they die. So it better be accurate. These disciplines are accountable. They’re held to a high standard because the consequences of being wrong are catastrophic.
Psychology? Not even close.
Junk Science in Headlines
I saw a headline recently: “One third of college men would rape a woman if they thought they could get away with it.” Naturally, I tracked down the study.
Here’s what it actually said:
The study had 86 participants.
All of them were men from the same college.
The findings came from a self-report questionnaire—meaning these guys answered questions about their own understanding of terms like “coercion” and “rape.”
All the study really found was that about a third of them didn’t know the difference between the terms.
That’s it. And somehow, this becomes a global claim about one-third of all college men. It’s scientific garbage. Not just misleading—it’s worse than useless, because people start building belief systems on top of it.
And this kind of thing happens all the time in psychology.
Why Psychology Fails the Science Test
Here’s what’s missing:
Sample Size
Most psychology studies are done on college students. Why? They’re easy to recruit. That’s not a representative population. That’s 18–22-year-olds under a huge amount of social pressure and hormonal chaos, usually from one location.Self-Report Bias
You ask someone what they’re like, and they tell you. That’s it. No third-party observation. No behavioral validation. And humans are notoriously terrible at self-assessment. Most people don’t know themselves well enough to be accurate. No Replication
In real science, a study gets published, and then other scientists try to replicate it. This is the stress test. If 10 other labs get the same result, we start to trust it. In psychology? Almost no studies are replicated. And there’s no money or prestige in replication. So bullshit floats to the top.Unrealistic Experimental Design
Psychology experiments are often weird, artificial scenarios in lab environments that have nothing to do with real life.
One example: Dan Ariely’s research on honesty (he’s now under scrutiny for data fraud, by the way). He gave people a test, then paid them based on their self-reported performance. He claimed that people cheated when no one was checking.
Does this reflect real life? No. Nobody ever gets paid for self-reporting test scores. It’s a fabricated scenario. So whatever the result is, it doesn’t tell us anything meaningful about how people behave outside the lab.
Psychology Is Closer to Astrology Than Science
Let’s be honest. Myers-Briggs? Total pseudoscience. It’s closer to a horoscope than a diagnosis. Yet it gets printed on company HR documents and people’s dating profiles like it means something.
The truth is, the people who truly understand psychology are the ones who apply it in the real world—and are forced to get real results:
Con artists
Seduction coaches
Marketers and advertisers
Gang leaders, CEOs, and politicians
Good therapists and coaches
These people test ideas by watching real human behavior, adjusting their strategies based on outcomes. They don’t rely on theories—they rely on what works.
My Wake-Up Call: From Degree to Real Life
I’ve got a psych degree. And when I left university and started working as a probation officer, I was forced to throw the textbook out the window.
The people in front of me didn’t match the textbook examples. Their behaviors couldn’t be diagnosed neatly. You couldn’t plug them into a chart and say, “This is what to do.”
I learned quickly that every person is a complex equation of background, trauma, personality, addictions, and relationships. No standardized model could account for it.
I got better results by throwing the book away and starting with a blank page:
“Who is this person? What actually works with them?”
That’s when I started to understand real psychology—not the textbook kind, but the kind you live and breathe and test every day.
The Corruption of Psychological Research
If you want to be truly disillusioned, look into how psychological studies are conducted.
I’ve worked as a research assistant. I’ve been directly told to fudge data to fit the hypothesis. Why? Because nobody’s going to check. The peer review board rarely investigates methodology. Nobody’s replicating the study. There’s no watchdog group with calculators and brain scans calling you out.
It’s all soft, squishy, and full of confirmation bias. And if your study produces a politically correct result, no one will touch it. It sails through unchecked.
Meanwhile, if you try this kind of thing in math or chemistry, people will destroy your work in minutes. Because it’s falsifiable and accountable. Psychology isn’t.
What Actually Works? Real-Life Application.
I believe neuroscience is the closest we have to a real science of the mind. Brain imaging, chemical pathways, observable behavior—it’s grounded in biology.
Everything else under the psychology umbrella? Use it cautiously. Some of it’s helpful. Most of it is either inaccurate or untestable.
So what should you do if you want to understand people—or yourself?
Trial and error.
If you want to learn confidence, don’t read another blog post—go start conversations. If you want to understand human motivation, go watch what people do, not what they say.
Get real-life data. Track your own patterns. Try something different. Reflect. Adjust. That’s how you learn. That’s how you grow.
Books can support this—but they should be second, not first.
Real wisdom is built in the trenches, not in a lecture hall.
Final Thoughts
I’m not against all psychology. I use some of it myself. But I handle it gently. Most of what I teach today comes from real-world experience—coaching, failures, client breakthroughs, and direct observation of what works for people over time.
So be skeptical when someone quotes a psychology study at you—especially if it sounds extreme, dramatic, or politically convenient. Ask:
How many people were studied?
How were the results measured?
Was it ever replicated?
Does this match what I see in the real world?
Don’t just absorb information because it’s dressed in academic language. Test it. Challenge it. Apply it.
That’s how you become someone who truly understands human behavior—not just someone who can quote studies.

💬 What Clients Say About Dan Munro Coaching
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ James K., CFO
“I actually believe women can be attracted to me now and I no longer see women as on a pedestal. I had created excuses in many areas of my life to keep me from changing to the person that is more successful. I am a happier person now. I actually feel confident that I will be able to achieve my most important goals whereas before I was almost resigned to never being in a relationship and had accepted that maybe it’s just not for me.”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Simon C., Insurance Analyst
