The Secret to Handling Emotions Like a Confident Man

How to Sit with Emotional Pain (Without Running from It)

The Real Source of Emotional Suffering

We’ve all been there—overwhelmed by sadness, anxiety, or frustration, looking for any escape. Some people use substances, others bury themselves in work. But what if we stopped running from emotional pain and instead learned how to sit with it?

To start, let’s break down what emotional pain actually is. There’s the raw emotion itself—the physiological sensations we label as anger, sadness, anxiety, etc. And then there’s suffering, which is what happens when we resist these emotions or believe we shouldn’t have them.

For many of us, especially those raised in Western cultures, emotions were framed as something to suppress. We were taught that certain emotions—sadness, fear, or vulnerability—are signs of weakness. But suppressing them doesn’t make them disappear; it just makes us ill-equipped to handle them when they inevitably surface. Instead, we distract ourselves or try to override them through substances, overwork, or avoidance.

But here’s the kicker: It’s not the emotions that hurt us—it’s our association with them.

The Problem with Labeling Emotions

Think about the word sadness. It’s just a label we use to describe a collection of sensations. What you feel when you say you’re sad might be completely different from what I feel when I say I’m sad.

For me, sadness feels like an aching in the chest, slight pressure behind the eyes, a heaviness in the limbs, and an urge to cry. For someone else, it might feel more like exhaustion or numbness. Yet we both use the same word.

The issue is that many of us have negative connotations attached to these words. If you grew up thinking “sadness = weakness,” then admitting sadness to yourself will come with shame. But what if, instead of using emotional labels, we simply described our physical sensations?

Instead of saying, “I feel sad,” try:

  • “I feel a heaviness in my chest.”
  • “There’s tension behind my eyes.”
  • “My shoulders feel slumped and tired.”

Suddenly, there’s no judgment. You’re simply describing what’s happening. This can be a game-changer in making peace with your emotions.

Expressing Emotion Without Judgment

If you struggle with expressing emotions, try practicing with neutral descriptions. Whether you do this in a journal, out loud to yourself, or with a trusted person, the goal is to articulate what’s happening in your body without labeling it as good or bad.

For example, instead of saying, “I feel angry,” you might say:

  • “I feel heat rising in my neck.”
  • “My fists keep clenching on their own.”
  • “There’s a tightness in my jaw.”

This approach also makes it easier to communicate emotions to others. Imagine telling a friend, “I feel offended.” They might mock or dismiss you. But if you say, “My heart started racing when you said that, and I feel tension in my chest,” there’s nothing for them to argue with. You’re simply stating facts.

The Purpose of Emotions: Indicators and Energy

Once you get comfortable with describing emotions neutrally, the next step is figuring out how to use them. Every emotion has a purpose.

  • Sadness is great for self-reflection, resting, or practicing gratitude.
  • Anger fuels determination, courage, and action.
  • Fear encourages curiosity—where is the actual threat? What can I learn from this?
  • Happiness signals that something is working—keep going!

Rather than suppressing or numbing emotions, use them as fuel. Write down different sensations you experience and brainstorm activities that suit each one.

For example:

  • If you feel heat in your chest (anger), maybe it’s a good time to work out or confront a difficult situation.
  • If you feel heaviness in your body (sadness), perhaps journaling or creating art would be a good outlet.

Emotions aren’t the enemy. They’re just energy, waiting to be directed somewhere useful.

Ditching Emotional Stories

The real suffering from emotions comes from the stories we attach to them:

  • “I feel sad, therefore I’m weak.”
  • “I feel anxious, therefore something must be wrong.”
  • “I feel angry, therefore I’m out of control.”

But emotions themselves aren’t stories. They’re just sensations—tension, heat, heaviness, pressure. When we learn to separate raw emotions from the narratives we attach to them, we strip away the unnecessary suffering.

Instead of thinking, I feel sad, so I must be broken, try: I feel an ache in my chest. What can I do with this feeling?

This shift changes everything.

Final Thoughts

Learning to be comfortable with emotional pain isn’t about numbing it or trying to “burn it up.” It’s about shifting your relationship with it. When you stop labeling emotions as bad and start describing them as neutral sensations, you remove the shame and resistance that make them feel unbearable.

So next time you’re overwhelmed by emotion, try this:

  1. Drop the labels. Instead of saying “I feel sad” or “I feel anxious,” describe what’s happening in your body.
  2. Express it neutrally. Speak, write, or reflect on your sensations without judgment.
  3. Ask: How can I use this? Every emotion has a purpose—find ways to channel it into action rather than suppression.

Emotions aren’t something to fear or escape from. They’re just signals from your body, waiting for you to listen.
