When the US gymnast Simone Biles proclaimed herself to be the best in the world, people called her arrogant and cocky.
Yet the truth is she’s won the World Championship 5 times, and is crushing the Olympics. So she literally is the best gymnast in the world.
She obviously wasn’t saying it to seek approval because she got a lot of disapproval from it (and must have known this would happen). All she was doing was stating the facts. To say anything else regarding her gymnastic skills would be lying.
How is stating the facts “arrogance”?
We’ve been raised to believe that dishonesty is modesty; that humility means to downplay your strengths. This doesn’t even make sense.
How is it humble to downplay your strengths with the goal being to seek approval? It’s not humble to seek approval. It’s selfish, narcissistic, and dishonest. It’s people pleasing. It’s manipulative.
It’s especially not humble to use the appearance of humility to show your superiority to others, like “I’m not going to say I’m better than you… which makes me better than you. I’m awesome because I’m modest”.
True humility has got to be linked to truth, which means you have to be honest about your strengths as well as your weaknesses.

Remember, before you start acting outraged, have they actually done you any harm? If not, then maybe you’re being the harmful one

It’s what happens when you’re really good at something and you let it go to your head. The humble nature she once had, has all but gone out the window. It’s funny when she makes comments about others, it’s deemed “honest” when someone else calls her out, they’re shunned. Yes she is an amazing gymnist. I wouldn’t say the best in the world, just the best seen by the world so far. Undoubtedly there will be someone new to come and blow her off her high horse. She is extremely arrogant and cocky.. I doubt my comments will be published. It’s also what happens now. Your opinions aren’t valid. Opinions are only valid if they’re in agreement with what the moderator agrees with. Truth hurts, therefore is censored.
I agree with you100%. From what I’ve seen and read she is the best. I don’t remember Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Bo Jackson, Tom Brady and so many other champions talking about being the GOAT. I mean Simone wore a goat uniform to the 2021 world championships. Five weeks before the Olympics she purchased a $63,000 goat necklace. When she was asked about it she said it was for the haters. I not once have heard about her being proud to represent the United States in the Olympics. When you are great you let others do all of the bragging and act like you’ve been there before not grow a huge head. Of course I cannot do what she does but I know if I was a champion like her I would act like a champion not a chump.
Maybe, but I wouldn’t be so quick to assume you’d be different in that situation. All my heroes seem to let fame and glory go to their heads, and I have to assume I would too. I think we make our heroes into gods and so they start to believe it. We must take responsibility for the way we treat people and the impact it has on them
So I can act as arrogant as I want if what I’m saying is true?
Really?
If what you’re saying is true then you’re not being arrogant. Arrogance is treating people like they’re lower than you. It’s got nothing to do with truthfulness.
Agreed…but the above post seems to be linking truth and arrogance in a negative way. i.e. it’s ok to be arrogant if what I’m saying is true. That’s patently UNtrue and will not win you friends in any case……true or otherwise.
Arrogance is a negative character trait (look up in Websters) and there’s no way to spin it positively. Period.
What I’m saying in the post is that you can’t be simultaneously arrogant and truthful. Arrogance is claiming superiority untruthfully
