[Short] Why plans always fail eventually

One of the best pieces of business advice I ever got, was this:

What got you here won’t get you there.

At the time, my business was stagnating. I was working hard but only just getting by. And my business coach at the time helped me see that I had reached the peak of the “level” I was on, and therefore needed to start behaving like someone at a higher level.

There was a time when being a people pleaser worked for me. And then I started feeling miserable and anxious all the time, so I had to explore integrity and confidence instead.

There was a time when being a Pick Up Artist worked for me (sort of). And then I ended up in superficial relationships and felt manipulative, so I had to explore being honest and authentic instead.

I see this problem play out in everybody’s lives.

We have a plan or a strategy, and at the time it was probably a good idea – not always but let’s say it was at the time. And then it just stops working, or the definition of “working” changes.

We have to understand that there is no plan or strategy that keeps serving well over time, they always become outdated.

New information should change your approach.

So, if you’re still using the same old strategy, whether it’s in your social life or your business or your health, and it’s been a while, and you’re noticing that the results aren’t so good anymore, it means it’s time to try something else.

  1. For me, the biggest strategy shift I’ve ever made was letting go of being a Nice Guy in favour of being an honest guy. Being a Nice Guy helped me survive as a kid but it was a terrible adult survival strategy.
