Most people follow rules, especially nice guys and people pleasers, because they want life to just be simple and ordered, and to make complete sense. So whether it’s the Ten Commandments of the church, or the law of the land or the cultural rules of your family. People try to follow these things, to give themselves a sense of purpose and meaning. Of course, that never happens. If you want to have meaning and purpose, you have to develop core values which are completely different. Whenever you ask, how do I live by my values? The answer is, it depends, it depends on the context. That depends, it’s always a nuanced reaction to what’s really happening, whereas rules, it doesn’t matter what’s happening, you just do the same thing every time. Rules are a prison; core values are freedom.
