One of the main solutions you see in the self-help industry around difficult emotions is this idea of pumping yourself up, of getting into “state.” This is a concept where you manufacture more elevated and positive emotions in order to prevent yourself experiencing the lower range and lower energy emotions. But this is actually a form of shame that reduces your confidence. A truly confident person is okay with whatever they feel. So if you’re tired, then be tired. If you’re antisocial, be antisocial. If you’re excited, be excited. That’s how you build confidence, not by trying to manufacture something that you’re not.
