Setting Boundaries In Relationships

Daily Dose of Integrity

Allow me to make setting boundaries in relationships really simple for you:

All you’ve got to remember is to always express your preferences.

What you want. What you don’t want. What you like. What you dislike. What you’d rather do. What you’d rather not do, and so on.

Make sure to do that, even in the seemingly insignificant conversations that may come up.

If your partner says “Oh, let’s go and get some ice cream!” Make sure you that say whether or not you actually want some ice cream right now. You probably do.

But, make it a habit to always express what you’d prefer, and not prefer, as honestly as possible. No matter how insignificant you may think the topic is, never take the position where you don’t care or you don’t know. Always choose a side.

From there, you have to decide—if there’s a disagreement on those preferences, whether this is a big deal or not.

Can you tolerate the disagreement or is this a deal breaker that needs to be discussed, and one person needs to adjust or the relationship needs to end?

  1. And if the topic is a deal-breaker, always make sure to clearly articulate how you want them to behave – don’t hope they’ll just guess correctly
