Removing Neediness in Dating: Making it Happen VS Letting it Happen

If you want to create a great connection with someone, with the hope of forming a long-term healthy relationship, one of the most tragic and ironic twists of fate is that trying to make this happen actually prevents it!

Today I want to simply define the difference between trying to make a relationship happen, versus just letting it happen. Figuring out this difference revolutionized my own dating life and was the main reason I was able to find my wife.

After working in psychology for 20 years, and coaching people in relationships for a large portion of that, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is one main enemy to finding the love of your life: NEEDINESS. If you can simply become non-needy – that is, not require love, approval and affection to feel good about yourself, and be willing to lose someone you’re interested in if they’re not a good fit – then most of your dating struggles will disappear.

To achieve this, you must understand what neediness is and why it occurs. Then you can figure out how to stop doing it.

Making it Happen

Most people try to make a relationship happen. What this means is they have a goal – e.g. get a girlfriend – and they act in a way to achieve the goal.

This treats connecting with other humans as a mathematical equation, rather than as a free-flowing exploration. Instead of getting to know people genuinely and allowing a connection to form, you try to force it to happen so that the goal will be achieved.

It will quickly escalate to the point where nearly every word out of your mouth is strategic rather than spontaneously honest. You’re always calculating, figuring out which move will most likely achieve the goal.

You’re not even barely considering whether the other person is the right match for you, or what it will be like to have to keep trying to make them like you forever. In a way, you’re very short-sighted – get the phone number, get the date, get the kiss, get the sex, get the commitment – not paying attention to the bigger picture.

Think about it: if you have to make them like you, then that means they DON’T like you! Otherwise, you wouldn’t need to make it happen.

So most people – in my experience – spend all their dating energy on basically trying to manipulate and force unwilling people to become their partners.

Neediness

When you’re trying to achieve a goal, you will become attached to the successful outcome you’re hoping for. This emotional attachment is the foundation for neediness.

Neediness is treating something you WANT as if it’s something you NEED. It’s where you become filled with an agitated desperation to make a hoped-for result come true, as if you’d die without it.

There are few traits more off-putting and unattractive than neediness. Only the most damaged people are attracted to it.

So when you turn another person into a goal, you will start to think, feel and behave in a needy way.

You try to make them laugh, instead of being spontaneously and genuinely humorous. You overthink what you’re going to say instead of comfortably speaking your mind. You pester and nag them for attention, repulsing them and making them wish they had more distance from you.

When you are focused on convincing someone to like you enough to become your partner, they can feel it. It’s like a suffocating blanket being forced over their head; they start desperately yearning for a breath of fresh air… i.e. a break from YOU.

Even if they were originally attracted to you, your neediness signals danger to them. It tells them that you need them more than they need you, which indicates you might be a parasite or at least a burden. It makes them feel like you’re forcing them to be responsible for your happiness, which is too much for them to handle.

And so they start pulling away. OR you attract a seriously unwell person with whom you’ll only have a disastrous relationship, even if it takes years to fall apart (the average lifespan of a marriage prior to divorce is 8 years).

Letting it happen

There is another way.

Instead of your goal being “to get a relationship”, leading you into strategic and needy behaviours, you can focus on something healthier and more effective: discovering genuine connections.

There are 3 key words there: Discover. Genuine. Connection.

Instead of making people like you, you aim to discover who already likes you just the way you are. That means, instead of putting on a performance to impress people, you courageously focus on expressing yourself honestly so that people see who you really are and can react to that person. That way, if they like you, it means they like you, not some act.

Everyone has different preferences. Your particular personality is appealing to some and repulsive to others. Rather than trying to convince repulsed people to change their minds, you can just find the ones who already like you for free, i.e. you don’t need to try at all.

This means focusing on being genuine rather than trying to be attractive, or interesting, or funny, or desirable. Being genuine means you let them see what your best friends and closest family members see. You let them know what they’re signing up for; no false marketing or sneaky fine print.

You’re honest about your preferences. You’re shameless about your hobbies. You’re up front about your principles and values. You let them see the full picture. Not all at once, perhaps, but never do you allow a false performance to overshadow the truth about you.

Being this radically honest and transparent will generally provoke one of two polarized reactions: they either really like you, or they really don’t.

When someone loves you for your honesty and truth, and you feel the same about them because they’re reciprocating, and it all feels effortless and wonderfully easy, then you have yourself a real connection. This is not something that can be forced or faked.

Letting it happen doesn’t mean giving up and hiding at home. You must still participate fully in socializing and dating. But your motives are different – you’re just finding out what happens when you’re honest with people, not trying to make something happen by manipulating them.

Practical differences

To finish up, let’s clear it up further: here are some comparisons of intent and behaviour that separate the two.

Making it HappenLetting it Happen
Having a list of conditions and criteria about your ideal partnerJudging each person individually based on how you feel about them
Creating special events and adjusting your calendar to their needsDoing what makes you enjoy life and inviting people you like to join in
People pleasing to make them feel happy around youSpeaking truthfully and respecting whatever emotional reaction they have
Pretending to agree and have things in commonStanding up for what you believe in without trying to convince them of anything
Systematically working through a set of stages in the interaction to escalate thingsSpeaking freely and trusting your gut, allowing the other person to lead as well as follow
Backing down when they’re upset with youRegularly allowing them to reconsider being with you, and encouraging them to leave if they don’t like you
Giving adviceLet them make mistakes
Targeting attractive people that will impress your friends and familyTalking to anyone and everyone, not focusing only on sexual attraction
Fixating on finding a partnerFixating on having a good time
Sacrificing your values to keep a partnerSacrificing a potential partner to maintain your integrity
Constantly trying to push the person into committing to youJust asking yourself “Who do I want to see today?” and inviting them out
Bragging about your achievements and showing your most positive traitsSpeaking to them like they’re already your best friend and there’s nothing left to prove
Avoiding controversial and emotional topics like politics and sexTalking about anything you find interesting
Losing interest and ghosting when you don’t think they are interested sexuallyAllowing people to be whatever, to have a role in your life that best suits you both
Overthinking to write the perfect text messageJust calling them impulsively

I could go on and on. But hopefully you get the point.

Being “nice” still isn’t working, is it?

You try to please everyone – partner, boss, friends, kids – and then secretly resent them for holding you back, even though you know it’s really your lack of boundaries and assertiveness. Relationships feel tense or flat. Your job pays the bills but feels like a soul‑draining compromise.

You censor what you really think and feel, swallow frustration, and end up with resentment, anxiety, and occasional bursts of anger that scare you. You worry that one day you’ll either explode at someone you love or collapse into anxious depression and give up on yourself.

You lie awake wondering if you’re destined to always be the “nice guy” who’s never truly respected.

That’s exactly where many of my clients started. Now they speak their minds calmly on the spot, stand up to high‑status people without blinking, build deep, honest relationships, and live according to their values rather than guilt and fear.

This coaching offer is designed to help you make that same shift with a clear, concrete roadmap… and without any high-pressure sales calls.

The Outcome

In the next 90 days, you’ll build the foundations of unshakeable integrity and social confidence so you can speak your mind, set firm boundaries, and stop people‑pleasing – without destroying your relationships or reputation.

By the end of this program, you will:

✅Have a clear personal code of values and standards so you know exactly what “living with integrity” means in practical, everyday decisions.

✅Be able to say what you really think and feel – even when it’s uncomfortable – in your relationship, at work, and with friends, without panicking about what others think.

✅Establish and enforce healthy boundaries so people stop walking over you, and you stop over‑delivering, over‑apologising, and over‑explaining.

✅Replace guilt, shame, and anxiety with grounded self‑respect, so you feel worthy of the life you actually want rather than settling.

The Mentorship Roadmap (3 phases)

Here’s exactly how we’ll create those results, step by step.

Phase 1 – Integrity Blueprint: Who you really are

  • We map out your current Nice Guy patterns: people‑pleasing, conflict avoidance, dishonesty, over‑giving, sexual shame, and hidden resentment.
  • You define your core values and non‑negotiable standards – your Integrity Blueprint – so you finally know what “being a good man” means for you, not for everyone else.
  • You get simple, real‑life exercises to start acting in alignment with this blueprint immediately (micro honesty, small confrontations, tiny acts of self‑respect).

✅Result of Phase 1: You stop feeling confused and start feeling clear – you know what the “right thing” is in tough situations, and have a blueprint to guide your behaviour.

Phase 2 – Courage and Communication: Saying what needs to be said

  • You learn practical communication tools to speak your mind respectfully: honest disclosures, clean confrontations, boundary statements, and “no” without guilt.
  • We prepare and debrief real conversations from your life (partner, boss, family), so you’re not just learning theory – you’re dealing with real situations and upgrading them.
  • You gradually face emotionally difficult situations – disagreements, criticism, saying “no” – in a controlled way that builds confidence rather than overwhelming you.

✅Result of Phase 2: You can have uncomfortable conversations without panicking, freezing, or lashing out. People start to see you as calm, honest, and respectable instead of “nice but weak”.

Phase 3 – Lifestyle Integration: Living as a confident, respected man

  • We redesign your daily routines, relationship habits, and social life to match your Integrity Blueprint: how you work, rest, connect, and pursue goals.
  • You create a realistic, sustainable action plan for the next 6–12 months so that the changes stick instead of fading once coaching ends.
  • We address the predictable resistance – from your own fear as well as from other people – and install strategies so you don’t relapse into old Nice Guy habits when things get tough.

✅Result of Phase 3: You’re no longer “doing a program”; you’ve become a different kind of man – one who leads with integrity, stands his ground, and builds relationships based on honesty instead of approval‑seeking.

Testimonials

You can read independent reviews from my coaching clients on Google here

Typical experiences for my clients (no promises – this is just what happened for them):

▶️Andy went from catastrophizing all the time about what his workmates and neighbours thought of him, to simply no longer caring about what anyone thought of him. Ever. This allowed him to finally start a side-hustle that he’d wanted to do for decades.

▶️Daniel cheated on his wife. She was about to divorce him. We repaired his marriage by learning to express his emotions clearly, set boundaries, and get over his fear of missing out. Now they’re stronger than ever before. And I helped him start his own business.

▶️Simon was a 30 year old virgin who could only get into the friendzone. He’s now married with two children, and is totally honest in the relationship.

▶️Tony was devastated after his wife of 8 years suddenly left him for another man after getting sick of his people pleasing. Now he’s travelling the world and dating amazing women that he once thought were out of his league. The people pleasing has stopped.

▶️Ian was terrified of commitment of any kind because deep down he thought he wasn’t good enough. He’s now married and expecting his first child, and he found the courage to go all in on his own business.

▶️Vince was constantly getting into pointless conflicts with his wife, and losing her respect. Now they’re a solid team, and she looks up to him as a man who can maintain boundaries without losing control.

▶️Jerry was still living at home in his late 20s, absolutely dominated by his controlling parents. His work colleagues bullied and controlled him too. He’s now living on his own, can approach and connect with beautiful women without fear, and is respected and known as someone you do not mess with at work.

FAQ

Who is this coaching really for, and how do I know if I’m a good fit?

The best fit for this program is a man who identifies as being Mr Nice Guy and/or a people pleaser, is dedicated to becoming more confident and authentic, and is willing to get uncomfortable trying some new behaviours.

What specific changes or results can I realistically expect in 90 days?

This obviously depends on your courage and what kind of trauma etc. holds you back, but you can reasonably expect to figure out your Nice Guy sabotaging beliefs and behaviours, fix the worst of them, feel confidence growing, know what your Core Values are and how to live by them, and learn how to create healthy relationships within 90 days. After that it’s just practice and repetition.

How is this different from therapy, books, or free confidence content online?

I will get inside your head for your specific needs, challenges and goals. I’m like a mental mechanic, I will help you pull yourself apart and put it all back together to function much more effectively. You can try doing this on your own too, just expect it to take years instead of months due to being unable to see your own blind spots.

What happens after I sign up – what’s the onboarding and session process like without a sales call?

After you’ve enrolled, you’ll be sent a link to book in your first session and you’ll receive an email with all links, bonuses and other information needed. During our first session the rest will be made clear. I have times available for anywhere in the world, and you can contact me if there’s an issue with finding a good time – we’ll make something work.

How much time per week will this require, and can it work with my job/family schedule?

Apart from the weekly coaching session, our work will be designed to integrate with your life. Your “homework” tasks will involve real-life situations, not extra work on top of your everyday activities. You already have enough time.

What if I do the work but don’t get results – do you have any kind of guarantee or safety net?

I can’t guarantee that you’ll do the work, I can only guarantee that I will deliver expert coaching built on a solid foundation of formal education, practical training, and decades of experience. I can guarantee that I have implemented all of this into my own life for incredible results. I can guarantee that nearly all of my clients who have courageously taken action have achieved results above and beyond their expectations. If you have a history of investing without doing the work, however, this is not for you.

How confidential are our sessions and messages, especially around sensitive topics like sex, shame, or trauma?

Highly confidential. The information won’t be shared with anyone without your permission. Calls are recorded for you, but only you and I will have access to the recordings.

What is your coaching style and philosophy – will I resonate with your direct, integrity‑based approach?

My style is straight to the point. I won’t be hard on you, but I will be honest. I will focus on pointing out the contradictions in your beliefs, and help you to take responsibility for your actions. I won’t allow you to play the victim and blame others for your choices or results. If you don’t want to take full responsibility for your life, I can’t help you.

What happens after the 90 days – can I continue, join a community, or move into more advanced coaching?

Some of my clients continue with more advanced coaching because they want to become insanely confident. Many of my clients continue with light-touch maintenance coaching (e.g. one session per month) to make sure they keep their progress going. Others continue with the Brojo community, using the courses and my books to stay on track. And some clients simply don’t need me at all any more and go off on their own.
