The positivity movement that came out a few decades ago, was a devastating blow to everyone’s self-worth, because being positive all the time, being happy all the time, is not humanly possible and even if it was it does not represent true self confidence. Now confident people are not always happy. They have the whole range of emotions but they are optimistic and that’s different from being positive. Being positive is pretending that everything is good and enjoyable and that life can always be enjoyed. Being optimistic is about looking at the situation realistically, and asking yourself, Where’s the advantage here? How do I make the most of this? What can I be grateful for? It’s based on truth, rather than lies. It doesn’t always lead to happiness, but it does lead to confidence.
