Navigating Confidence: Stay True to Your Path

A client of mine and I were talking about what staying true to one’s path might mean. Consider this:

You might be walking down the street and you see a group of guys on the corner who look a bit intimidating.

You start to slowly, about ten meters away, deviate so you won’t walk too close to them.

You start telling yourself a story like: “Oh, it doesn’t matter; I just want to walk on this side anyway,” and so on. You also want them to think: “Hey, I didn’t move for you; I moved ten meters back. This has nothing to do with you.”

You’re getting into this big drama about how you’re going off your path—quite literally off path—to avoid these guys. But if they weren’t there and you didn’t feel intimidated, you wouldn’t have moved.

Confidence is going back on track—keep walking like you would have walked.

Walk where you want to go.

I don’t mean smashing through people, or not adjusting for others’ existence, but not letting your own emotions be a reason to go off track when there’s no rational evidence supporting that this isn’t the best way forward.

This is what helps you grow and brings you the life you want.

So, what I’d suggest is to ask yourself: “If I was not intimidated, how would I act?” Then, try to maintain that.

  1. Check in with yourself when you feel uneasy about your decision: did you choose it, or did you follow someone else’s lead?
