Luck and Karma: The Nice Guy Double Standard

If you’re a nice guy or a people pleaser, you’ll notice a double standard you have around the concept of luck.

You downplay things that go well and attribute it to luck.

Let’s say you got a new job. You’ll say, “Oh I was just in the right place at the right time, “or, “They must be desperate, they shouldn’t have hired me, I don’t really deserve it” or whatever. You’ll play it down like Fate gave you this reward.

But when things go wrong, you take full responsibility. “I should have thought of this. I made a mistake. It was my fault. I’m an awful waste of human excrement.”

This shows a split philosophy. Either stuff happens because of fate and luck, or you are the primary mover / agency and you cause the results.

It’s one or either; it can’t be both.

If you notice this double standard you have, you’ll realize you’re manipulating people into thinking you’re humble and preventing their jealousy by downplaying your successes and overplaying your weaknesses.

It’s just another form of dishonesty.

Pick a side. Either everything is luck, in which case you’re not a bad person for making mistakes or falling short. Or everything is determined by your actions, in which case you’re equally responsible for your wins as you are for your failures.
