Beyond Small Talk: How to Build Rapport Through External Training

This post is an excerpt from my course on building rapport and going beyond small talk to develop deeper connections. If you find this valuable, check out the full course via the link below.

Why Social Skills Go Beyond Just Talking

One of the best pieces of dating advice I ever received was: “Become someone that you would recommend to others.” Building rapport isn’t just about knowing what to say; it’s about having a life worth sharing. The more interesting and developed you are as a person, the easier it becomes to connect with others.

This post explores various external skills and practices—many of which aren’t directly social but will drastically improve your ability to connect with people.

1. Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation sharpens cognitive abilities, but more importantly, it enhances your ability to be fully present in conversations. When someone speaks, your biggest distraction is usually your own thoughts. Meditation helps you practice letting go of intrusive thoughts, so when you’re in a conversation, you can truly listen instead of waiting for your turn to talk.

2. Reading and Self-Education

Want to have interesting things to say? Feed your brain. Reading broadens your worldview, introduces new perspectives, and gives you an endless supply of conversation topics.

If you regularly explore different ideas, philosophies, and cultures, you’ll always have something meaningful to contribute.

3. Travel

Many people struggle with connection because they haven’t expanded their experiences beyond their immediate environment. Even if you can’t travel internationally, explore your own city. The more you expose yourself to different cultures, landscapes, and ways of life, the more relatable and open-minded you become.

You’ll start to see how people from different backgrounds are more alike than different, making it easier to find common ground in conversations.

4. Hobbies

Hobbies serve two purposes:

  1. They introduce you to like-minded people in social settings.
  2. They make you a more interesting person with unique stories to share.

Whether it’s salsa dancing, rock climbing, or playing in a metal band, your hobbies naturally create talking points. People who engage in diverse activities become more flavorful, making them stand out in social interactions.

5. Video Journaling

Most people struggle to talk about themselves. Video journaling helps by forcing you to speak your thoughts out loud and observe your own communication style.

Watching yourself on video will highlight:

  • Body language
  • Voice tone
  • Confidence levels
  • Areas for improvement

This practice makes expressing yourself in real conversations feel more natural and fluid.

6. Upgrading Your Communication Medium

If you normally text someone, call them instead. If you usually call, meet in person. Push yourself to upgrade your communication level whenever possible.

Most people rely on low-effort, low-risk communication, like texting, which hides real emotion and depth. Learning to embrace spontaneous, face-to-face conversations will make your social skills significantly stronger.

7. People Watching (and Judging, Honestly)

Some of the best lessons on human connection come from observing others. Pay attention to:

  • Couples with deep connections
  • Close friends interacting
  • Skilled communicators in action

What are they doing that works? What makes them engaging? Eavesdrop on conversations (subtly!) and analyze what builds rapport between people.

8. Writing Stories About Your Life

Storytelling is one of the most powerful communication tools. Before you can tell stories well, you need to write them down.

Start with personal experiences:

  • Childhood memories
  • Fun travel experiences
  • Unexpected life lessons

Practicing how to structure a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end will make you much more engaging in real-life conversations.

9. Identifying and Expressing Emotions

If you struggle to articulate emotions, start by simply identifying them privately. Every few hours, pause and ask yourself, “How do I feel?”

Practice putting emotions into words. Instead of “I feel bad,” try:

  • “I feel frustrated because I didn’t get enough sleep.”
  • “I feel excited because I’m making progress on my goals.”

The more comfortable you are expressing emotions alone, the easier it becomes in social interactions.

10. Practicing with TV Shows and Movies

Use your favorite shows as training grounds for conversations. Pause after a character speaks and respond as if they were talking to you.

This is a great way to practice:

  • Reflective listening
  • Asking deeper questions
  • Formulating quick, natural responses

11. Studying Psychology and Philosophy

Understanding why people think, feel, and act the way they do will give you a major advantage in social settings.

Study:

  • Cognitive biases
  • Social dynamics
  • Group behavior
  • Decision-making processes

The more insight you have into human nature, the more easily you can connect, empathize, and adapt in conversations.

12. Partner Dancing

Dancing (especially styles with a lead-and-follow dynamic) teaches nonverbal communication and connection-building skills. It also:

  • Boosts comfort with physical touch
  • Enhances ability to “read” social cues
  • Mimics the push-pull dynamics of flirting and dating

Plus, the social environment of dance communities is one of the easiest ways to meet people and practice rapport-building.

13. Learning Another Language

Learning a new language doesn’t just expand your vocabulary—it rewires your brain to think differently. Language contains culture, and when you start thinking in another language, you also start seeing the world from a new perspective.

This makes you more adaptable and empathetic in conversations, especially with people from different backgrounds.

Take Action

Pick one skill from this list and commit to it. Approach it with the intention of developing your social abilities and watch how it transforms your interactions.

💬 What Clients Say About Dan Munro Coaching

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ James K., CFO

“I actually believe women can be attracted to me now and I no longer see women as on a pedestal. I had created excuses in many areas of my life to keep me from changing to the person that is more successful. I am a happier person now. I actually feel confident that I will be able to achieve my most important goals whereas before I was almost resigned to never being in a relationship and had accepted that maybe it’s just not for me.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Simon C., Insurance Analyst

“I was having a problem with self-confidence which was ruining my life. I felt confused, desperate, and was losing hope. Dan helped me rediscover my core values and I have started to build a life I truly want to live. I found the courage to take a risk with exploring a new career path. After a lifetime of being chronically single, I’ve connected deeply with a high-quality woman to create a real relationship for the first time in my life! I wouldn’t trade places with anyone else in the world and for the first time ever I like being me.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ James P., Life Coach

“After being coached by Dan, I started to push my comfort zones more and more. Things that were foreign/difficult to me became less so. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pulkit K., Dentist

“I started my journey as ‘Mr. Nice Guy’. I would find it hard to rock the boat. Trying to avoid confrontation at work was leading to frustration and low self-esteem. I used to be scared to assert myself for fear of coming across as an unpleasant person. Thanks to my work with Dan, I have practiced the simple yet difficult task of expressing myself honestly. Handling confrontation is a skill I continue to get better at. It has helped me cultivate deeper and more satisfying relationships at work, and even led to me being invited to speak internationally to other professionals.”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Emma J., Artist

“Dan helped me break through so many barriers, fears, and doubts. He allowed me to see who I really am, who I want to be, and what I am capable of. A friend recently asked me what made my dream of traveling overseas finally possible… The answer was easy: the work I’ve done with Dan. It’s no longer just wishful thinking that one day I might improve myself—it’s now an exciting reality.”
