How to Become Comfortable with Emotional Pain and Find Your True Self

Understanding Emotional Pain

Emotional pain isn’t just about feeling sadness, anger, or anxiety—it’s about how we relate to those feelings. The real suffering comes not from the emotions themselves but from our resistance to them.

Many of us, especially men raised in Western cultures, have been conditioned to believe that emotions are a sign of weakness. We’ve learned to suppress or override them with distractions like work, substances, or endless entertainment. But the emotions don’t disappear; they just remain unresolved beneath the surface, festering and influencing our lives in ways we don’t always recognize.

If you look at someone who is comfortable expressing emotions, they don’t seem to suffer in the same way. They might feel sadness deeply, but they don’t label it as a bad experience. It’s similar to lifting weights—if you expect soreness, you don’t resist it, and it doesn’t feel like suffering. But if you feel the same pain outside the gym, you might panic, thinking something is wrong.

The first step to making peace with emotional pain is to shift your mindset from “emotions are bad” to “emotions are just sensations.”

Ditching Emotional Labels

Words like sadness, anger, or anxiety come with baggage. We associate them with past experiences, cultural conditioning, and personal stories. Instead of labeling emotions, try describing them physically.

For example:

  • Instead of “I feel sad,” say, “I have an aching feeling in my chest and a pressure behind my eyes.”
  • Instead of “I feel anxious,” say, “I have a fluttering sensation in my stomach and a tightness in my chest.”
  • Instead of “I feel angry,” say, “There’s heat in my neck and tension in my fists.”

By stripping away the labels, you detach from the unnecessary narratives that create suffering. You’re left with a pure experience of emotion—just a set of sensations moving through your body.

Expressing and Releasing Emotions

Once you can describe your emotions in neutral, physical terms, the next step is to express them. This can be done through speaking, journaling, art, music, or even physical movement.

You don’t have to cry if sadness doesn’t come naturally to you. Instead, you might write, create, or simply sit with the feeling. If you’re angry, you don’t have to lash out—you can channel that energy into exercise, assertive communication, or creative work.

Each emotion has a function:

  • Sadness helps with reflection and rest.
  • Anger fuels determination and courage.
  • Fear sharpens awareness and encourages self-exploration.
  • Happiness signals that what you’re doing is working.

Instead of trying to “fix” emotions, ask: How can I use this feeling? Each emotion is a source of energy that can be directed in a way that aligns with your values.

Finding Your People

If you’ve ever felt like it’s hard to find people you truly connect with, you might be looking in the wrong places—or using the wrong criteria. Many people create rigid checklists for friendships or relationships, focusing on shared interests rather than shared values.

For example, someone might say they’re looking for people who are independent-minded, highly educated, and well-traveled. But those traits don’t guarantee a deep connection. A serial killer could check all those boxes. Instead, ask yourself: What values do I admire in people?

  • Do you value honesty? Then look for people who speak their minds, even when it’s uncomfortable.
  • Do you value courage? Then find activities that challenge you and see who else is drawn to them.
  • Do you value kindness? Then engage in environments where people help each other, like volunteer work or mentorship programs.

The key isn’t to “find friends”—it’s to do what you love and meet people there. Instead of thinking, Where do I find people like me? ask, Where do I need to be to live my values? The right people will show up naturally.

Overcoming Nice Guy Syndrome in Performance

Many people, especially nice guys, use performance—whether on stage, in social settings, or in their careers—as a way to seek approval. There’s nothing wrong with performing or entertaining, but the key question is: Are you doing this because you love it, or because you need validation?

A healthy performer enjoys the act itself, regardless of audience reaction. An unhealthy performer needs constant praise and suffers when they don’t get it. If you’re in the latter category, try detaching from outcomes:

  • Perform for yourself, not the audience.
  • Include something in your performance that you enjoy, even if others won’t.
  • Take creative risks that might not be well-received but feel authentic to you.

When you stop chasing validation, your performances will not only feel more fulfilling but often become better and more magnetic.

Discovering Who You Really Are

If you’ve spent your life pleasing others, you may feel disconnected from your true self. One tool that can help is the 51% Rule—if you’re even slightly leaning toward a belief or preference, act as if you’re fully committed to it.

For example, if you think you might prefer direct honesty over people-pleasing but aren’t sure, start acting as if honesty is your only option. See how it feels. You can always adjust later, but the key is to act rather than sit in confusion.

Another way to discover your true self is to compare your stated beliefs to your actual behavior:

  • If you say honesty is important but frequently tell white lies, there’s a disconnect.
  • If you say you value courage but avoid difficult conversations, you’re out of alignment.
  • If you say you believe in kindness but often lash out in frustration, you need to examine what’s really driving you.

True clarity comes from acting in alignment with your values. If your actions don’t match your beliefs, either change your actions or admit that your beliefs were never real to begin with.

Conclusion: Aligning Values with Actions

Growth isn’t about becoming someone new—it’s about stripping away the layers of pretense and aligning your actions with what you truly believe. That requires:

  • Letting go of emotional labels and experiencing feelings as they are.
  • Expressing emotions in a way that aligns with their natural function.
  • Seeking relationships based on values rather than superficial traits.
  • Performing because you love it, not because you need approval.
  • Testing your beliefs through action to discover what truly resonates.

Self-awareness and confidence don’t come from sitting around trying to “figure yourself out.” They come from taking action, testing your instincts, and adjusting based on what feels right. By embracing emotional discomfort, aligning behavior with values, and committing to living honestly, you can cultivate a life of authenticity and self-respect.

  1. I think a huge myth is that men aren’t as emotional as women. Men are just suppressed, they feel it strongly too.
