Today I’m going to try to convince you that being radically honest – that is, fully honest without any exceptions, no matter the consequences – is not just a moral position, but a logical one. I’m going to show you that the best life you could hope for is waiting for you: you just need to stop lying, hiding, shaming yourself, avoiding conflict, and keeping secrets.
I’ve coached hundreds of people to increase their honesty and integrity, and nearly every single one of them continued to become more honest over time after our work was completed. They never found a more effective way of achieving their goals of social abundance, high self confidence, and career success.
Let’s talk about what they discovered.
The Monty Hall Problem
Have you heard of this? It’s a lesson in logic.
Let’s say you’re on a game show. You have to choose one door out of three. One door has a car behind it, the other two have goats. Guess the door with the car, and you win!
You start by choosing any door you want. That door now remains closed. Then the host of the show will open one other door, revealing a goat.
You are now given a dilemma: stick with the door you picked originally, or switch to the remaining door? One of them has the car.
Most people think that this is now a 50/50 decision; that each of the remaining closed doors is equally likely to have a car behind it. But here’s where it gets weird: they’re not!
Mathematically (and this has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt), you’re best off switching! Statistically, the door you originally chose only has a ⅓ chance of having a car behind it, while the other door has a ⅔ chance.
If you’re like me, this will sound like bullshit to you. But the simple fact is, because the host knew where the car was and then deliberately chose a door to reveal that he knew had a goat behind it, he increased the likelihood of the unchosen door having the car. Your first choice is untested (the host wasn’t allowed to open it), so the host has semi-validated the remaining door because he didn’t choose it.
To help it make sense, if there were 100 doors to choose from, and the host eliminated all but one door (and the ones he opened were all goats), now would you want to switch to the one he left unopened? It’s far more likely that his remaining door has the car, than you choosing a car when you had a 1/100 chance, right?
What the fuck does this have to do with honesty?
In the Monty Hall problem, what we have is an untested door vs a tested door. The one you chose is untested, while the other door has survived an elimination challenge. The other door is therefore twice as likely to be a valid contender for the car, because if it has the car the host couldn’t have chosen it (he’s only allowed to reveal a goat).
There’s a lesson here: when something untested is going up against something tested – and tested in a way that makes sense for the goal (e.g. winning a car) – then of course the tested option is statistically a better guess. Sure, not guaranteed, but better.
Let’s translate this to social strategies. Most people’s social strategies have one main line in common: they involve dishonesty.
Whether it’s seducing people with charm; pleasing people with self-sacrifice; avoiding conflict by staying quiet; manipulating people with guilt – whatever the policy, some form of deception is required. That’s what I learned from my work rehabiliating criminal offenders: any form of deliberate manipulation requires dishonesty.
In other words, radical honesty is actually the absence of any strategy. It’s unlike any other method. You just speak your mind and let shit happen. You’ve completely let go of controlling other people and the social outcomes. All other strategies are attempts at controlling the outcomes.
Being radically honest is the door you haven’t yet opened. The host of the game – represented by the masses of people you’ve met – has been opening doors one a time for years.
He opened the people pleaser door… that didn’t work. He opened the standoffish cool guy door… that didn’t work. He opened the pretending you’re ok with everything door… that didn’t work. And on and on.
You’ve tried so many different ways to achieve your social goals of feeling connected, making great friendships, and finding an amazing partner. Sure, you’ve had some good times, but you still haven’t yet ‘won the car’, have you?
And here’s the crazy thing: all of my new coaching clients who report having at least one or a couple of real connections also notice these are the only people they’re totally honest with. And yet when they meet new people, they still think using strategies is a good idea!

Honesty is the logical choice
Of course, there are still plenty more doors to open. Maybe you haven’t tried being sophisticated and charming; or funny and sarcastic; or pretending to be super interested. There’s probably a thousand more tactics you could play with.
But there’s a theme developing over time: one by one, each dishonest approach is proving to be invalid.
And the one really unique approach that remains unopened is full-blown honesty; the only approach that does not have the line of dishonesty running through it.
Anyone with a grasp of statistics should be seriously considering the validity of honesty at this point. Sure, dishonesty not working isn’t “proof” that honesty will definitely work, but it’s also not a random guess at this point either. The invalidation of dishonesty is the validation of honesty. Not 100%, but enough to consider it worth trying.
Why doesn’t it feel logical?
Like the Monty Hall problem, where most people feel that switching doors would not increase their odds, our feelings about statistical likelihood of social success when it comes to honesty is similarly flawed. We feel like being more honest wouldn’t help, but we’re simply wrong about that.
There are good reasons for this.
You have been conditioned and programmed to be dishonest since childhood. From politeness to professionalism to protecting people’s feelings, you’ve been told that dishonesty is necessary to create social harmony. The idea that dishonesty actually causes disharmony is a totally foreign concept to you, even though it’s so obvious when you think about it (e.g. when’s the last time you saw someone reacting well to finding out they were deceived?)
You are surrounded by dishonest people. There’s a bias called social proof that states the more we see people liking something, the more we believe it must be good. Marketers use this bias to create desire for a product that you wouldn’t want otherwise. Everyone you know lies and justifies dishonesty in some way, so it feels abnormal to be radically honest. And it is! It’s also abnormal to not drink alcohol, spend time in nature every day, and stay happily married. Being healthy and successul is abnormal.
You’ve been punished for honesty. You will have clear memories when being honest about yourself was met with harsh penalties, like being bullied, dumped, fired, or disappointing your parents. Honesty got the blame for these outcomes, even though if you’d applied radical honesty from the start it would have prevented things ever getting this far.
You’ve never pushed through the ‘transition phase’. Maybe you’ve dabbled in honesty, got a few “bad” reactions, and given up. This is like someone going to the gym for a week, not seeing abs develop immediately, and then deciding that all exercise is ineffective. When you’ve created a house of lies, you must tear it down. These painful experiences are not because of the newly introduced honesty, it’s because of revealing the original deceptions. Honest people don’t have to tear anything down. Once you’re through the transition phase, radical honesty will ensure you don’t build anything that needs to be destoyed later.
Why not give it a go?
When you’ve opened dozens of doors and found nothing but smelly goats, maybe it’s time to try opening that door you don’t feel like switching to. The odds are objectively in your favour at this point.
Think of these similar comparisons:
- If you’ve lived in 10 different cities in your country and never felt at home, it makes sense to move overseas,
- If you’ve tried a bunch of different trade jobs and hated them all, it’s actually now less risky to switch to coding,
- If you’ve been dieting all your life and just keep putting the weight back on, then the one nutrition approach you’ve been avoiding because it’s harder than the others is starting to look pretty good
What have you really got to lose? If you’re already feeling disconnected, lonely, frustated, fake, and suppressed, is it really going to be so bad to have a few people get upset over your honesty? Is being disliked really going to be worse than never getting to speak your mind?
You might think so. But why would you trust such thoughts when you’ve never opened the door and given it a good go? Such thoughts must be based on myth and fantasy, because they’re certainly not based on facts.
Come on! You’re smarter than this.
Refusing to try honesty – despite seeing all dishonest methods fail to deliver on their promises – is just illogical. You’re allowing fear and social conditioning to make decisions for you. Doesn’t that make you feel like a prisoner?
My journey with honesty
I swtiched to radical honesty in 2011 (or close enough). The freedom alone is enough of a reason for me to keep doing it. I never have to strategise, worry about what to say next, or pretend in any way. It’s like being released from a cage. I simply can’t go back to being a slave to social harmony now.
But that’s not all.
When I made the switch, my less healthy and toxic friends simply vanished. My healthy friendships got much deeper and way more loyal, and I found it astonishingly easy to make new friends quickly. I’d just open my mouth, say whatever I felt was true, and boom! New friends, just like that.
My dating life went from zero to total abundance. I lost all fear of rejection. When you’re being honest, you can’t get rejected, because you’re not asking for anything! They either like you or they don’t – you simply discover the truth. So simple. So effortless. And it turns out that being radically honest is considered sexy by many women. Way more than I would have dreamed of!
I met my wife by just telling her how I felt about her, and telling her I wanted her. To this day, I just speak my mind at all times, and my marriage feels totally secure. The average duration of a relationship prior to divorce is 8 years. We’re about to hit our 10th anniversary.
I raise my daughter by just speaking the truth I never lie just to make raising her more convenient. She respects me, and trusts me. She doesn’t ever have to worry that I’m tricking her. And surprisingly, she’s really good at telling when people are fake or lying. I guess she compares them to her parents and sees the difference!
Start small
Try a 3 month experiment where all you do is try to be a bit more honest every day.
When someone asks how you’re doing, answer accurately instead of saying “Fine”.
Next time you see a friend, tell them how you feel about them, even though you think it’s already obvious to them. You’d be surprised.
When your wife wants you to go to the mall with her, finally admit that you hate malls and would prefer to watch the game. She’ll survive.
If your mother badgers you about when you’re going to get married and settle down, calmly tell her that you don’t want to talk about it any more, and gently hang up if she doesn’t respect that.
Just stick with it for a while, if for no other reason so you can say “I tried”. Make sure you don’t end up on your deathbed thinking, “Fuck, what if Dan was right? Did I miss out all these years just because I was a bit nervous about rejection and conflict?”
You don’t want to be thinking about me during that special time. So at least eliminate the option.
It’s just logical.

💬 What Clients Say About Dan Munro Coaching
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ James K., CFO
“I actually believe women can be attracted to me now and I no longer see women as on a pedestal. I had created excuses in many areas of my life to keep me from changing to the person that is more successful. I am a happier person now. I actually feel confident that I will be able to achieve my most important goals whereas before I was almost resigned to never being in a relationship and had accepted that maybe it’s just not for me.”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Simon C., Insurance Analyst
“I was having a problem with self-confidence which was ruining my life. I felt confused, desperate, and was losing hope. Dan helped me rediscover my core values and I have started to build a life I truly want to live. I found the courage to take a risk with exploring a new career path. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pulkit K., Dentist
“I started my journey as ‘Mr. Nice Guy’. I would find it hard to rock the boat. Trying to avoid confrontation at work was leading to frustration and low self-esteem. I used to be scared to assert myself for fear of coming across as an unpleasant person. Thanks to my work with Dan, I have practiced the simple yet difficult task of expressing myself honestly. Handling confrontation is a skill I continue to get better at. It has helped me cultivate deeper and more satisfying relationships at work, and even led to me being invited to speak internationally to other professionals.”
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Emma J., Artist
“Dan helped me break through so many barriers, fears, and doubts. He allowed me to see who I really am, who I want to be, and what I am capable of. A friend recently asked me what made my dream of traveling overseas finally possible… The answer was easy: the work I’ve done with Dan. It’s no longer just wishful thinking that one day I might improve myself—it’s now an exciting reality.”
