Going Zero: The Trick That Defused the Most Toxic Man I Ever Met

The Power of Doing Nothing: How I Learned to Handle the Most Difficult People

Today I want to share one of the most powerful lessons I’ve ever learned about confrontation—one that came from working with the most challenging individuals imaginable during my time in the Department of Corrections.

As a probation officer (or “parole officer” in some regions), part of my job was confronting people who were not just difficult—they were explosive, manipulative, volatile, and sometimes dangerous. And out of all the offenders I worked with, there was one who stood out as the worst of the worst.

To protect his identity, I’ll call him Liam. That’s not his real name, but let’s just say he committed the kinds of crimes that make you lose faith in humanity. He had a long and colorful criminal history, and more than that, a personality that just couldn’t function without conflict. This guy lived for drama.

A Walking Nightmare

Liam was under an Extended Supervision Order, which meant we had to monitor him for the rest of his life. He’d been trespassed from every other government agency due to threats, violence, and abuse. Housing, welfare, social services—nobody would work with him. We were his last resort.

Every week, he was scheduled to meet with someone like me. When he showed up, those were the worst days. Within 30 seconds of any session, he’d be yelling. Screaming. Accusing. Breaking things. One time he punched himself in the face repeatedly until I had to call an ambulance. He’d make violent threats—claiming he’d find my house and shoot me. He had contagious skin diseases and never took care of himself, so even being in the same room felt like a biohazard. He was a nightmare.

Now, we were highly trained in de-escalation: motivational interviewing, forensic psychology, rolling with resistance—you name it. And none of it worked. In fact, anything we tried made him worse. Speaking calmly? He’d scream louder. Reflective listening? Enraged him. Confronting him directly? Dangerous. He was the human equivalent of a Molotov cocktail.

Eventually, I became the only person legally allowed to work with him. He’d driven everyone else off with threats and abuse. I brought in top experts, senior staff, psychologists—nothing helped. I tried everything. I ran out of tools, and then I ran out of steam.

The Breakthrough: Doing Nothing

One day, I told my supervisors: We’ve tried everything. Let me try doing nothing.

And I meant it literally.

So, Liam came in, launched into his usual tirade—accusing, yelling, threatening—and I just sat there. I made friendly eye contact. I was attentive. But I said nothing. No defense. No correction. No emotional reaction. Nothing.

He got angrier. “Why aren’t you answering me?! Say something!” But I didn’t.

I wasn’t frozen. I wasn’t dissociating. I was just… curious. Like a scientist observing a wild animal. I was there, but I gave him nothing to latch onto.

And then something amazing happened.

Within minutes, I could see the air coming out of the balloon. His rants became forced instead of furious. His volume dropped. He kept trying to fire back up to a 10 but couldn’t sustain it. He’d peak at a 7… then a 5… then back down.

This guy once screamed for 90 minutes straight, but now, after about seven minutes of me doing absolutely nothing, he ran out of steam. And then—for the first time in four years—we had a calm conversation.

The Pattern

He still escalated occasionally, but now I had the tool: go to zero. No reaction. No response. No emotion. Just wait.

Over time, he learned. When he screamed, I did nothing. When he calmed down, we could talk. And slowly but surely, the screaming stopped altogether. Eventually, he started coming in and being respectful from the start. Because at some level, he learned: “This guy won’t give me anything unless I’m calm.”

Even better? I started trying it with other high-conflict offenders. It worked even faster. I taught it to my colleagues. It worked for them too. The worst offender in the country had accidentally helped me discover a method that worked almost universally.

What I Call the “Seven Minute Rule”

This technique only works if you’re willing to endure discomfort. Seven minutes of someone shouting at you, insulting you, accusing you—it feels like an eternity. But if you can hold the line without flinching, without defending, without trying to fix or help or justify, something magical happens.

They burn out.

Why? Because explosive behavior is usually fueled by reaction. When you take that fuel away, the fire burns out.

But here’s the key: zero response doesn’t mean you zone out. It doesn’t mean you’re frozen. You’re there. Attentive. Calm. Curious. Just not giving them anything to work with.

And after a long enough silence, when the storm has passed, you can say something like:

“You’ll need to speak to me respectfully. If you can’t do that, I’ll just wait.”

They’ll probably blow up again. So you wait again. But now, they see a pattern.

They escalate = nothing. They de-escalate = they get what they want.

Over time, the math starts to make sense to them.

Not Just for Criminals

Since then, I’ve used this method hundreds, maybe thousands of times—professionally and personally. With raging Karens at the bus stop. With narcissistic family members. With argumentative partners. It works everywhere someone is using volume or chaos to hijack communication.

And you don’t have to be cold or manipulative. You’re not punishing them. You’re simply refusing to fuel the fire.

You’re saying: “We can talk. But only when you’re calm.”

That’s it.

The Hassle Method

Most people aren’t driven by guilt or shame or even reason. They’re driven by hassle. If being disrespectful leads to everything getting harder, longer, and less rewarding—and if being respectful leads to things going smoothly—they’ll almost always choose the path of least resistance.

This is what I call the Hassle Method. Make being difficult a hassle. Make being respectful rewarding.

Bonus Trick: Ask Them to Repeat It

Here’s a cheeky trick: once they finish their rant, ask them to say it all again. Something like:

“I really want to understand—can you repeat that?”

This not only burns them out faster, but also reveals whether their rant had any real substance. You’d be surprised how often they can’t repeat what they just said—because they didn’t mean it. They were just throwing out noise to get a reaction.

Now, once they’re calm, you can validate their real concerns. But only then.

A Final Word

This method isn’t for every situation. If your partner is mildly frustrated because you didn’t do the dishes, don’t stonewall them into oblivion. This is a tool for extreme situations: the manipulators, the explosive types, the ones who always derail communication with rage or drama.

You’re not trying to change them. You’re training yourself—to endure, to stay calm, to hold the line. They will either adjust, or they won’t. That part isn’t up to you.

But if you do this consistently, and they can adjust, they will.

So the next time someone tries to hijack your conversation with rage, accusations, or chaos—don’t respond. Don’t explain. Don’t fight back.

Just go to zero.

And wait.

You’d be amazed how quickly the fire dies without oxygen.
