Finding Your Integrity: Core Values to Live By

Finding Your Integrity: How Core Values Shape Confidence and a Better Life

Today, we’re diving deep into integrity—what it means, how to find your core values, and how to live by them. If you’re looking for the practical formula to build confidence and live the best possible life, this is for you.

What is Integrity?

Integrity can be defined in two ways:

  1. Being undivided—cohesive and whole.
  2. Being honest—having strong moral principles.

Put simply, integrity means being consistently true to yourself and your values. Confidence, I believe, is built through integrity, and the foundation of integrity is a set of core values.

Why Core Values Matter

Living with integrity means aligning your behavior with your core values. No one is perfect, and we all stray from our values at times. But the more frequently your actions reflect your values, the more integrity—and confidence—you build.

Think of integrity as a diamond with multiple facets—your core values are the sides of that diamond. The more consistently you live by them, the more complete and whole you feel.

What Core Values Are (and What They Are Not)

Core Values Are Not:

  • Virtues: Values imposed by society, religion, or family. True values come from within, not external expectations.
  • Goals: Values are not about results. They focus on your behavior and intentions, regardless of the outcome.
  • Rules: There are no hard rules in integrity. Core values require context and adaptability.
  • Dependent on Others: Core values are something you can live by at all times, regardless of external circumstances.

Core Values Are:

  • Personal principles that guide your decisions and actions.
  • Outcome-independent—they focus on how you act, not what you achieve.
  • Intrinsically motivated—driven by your internal compass, not external approval.
  • Practical and actionable—if a core value doesn’t translate into clear behaviors, it’s not useful.

Discovering Your Core Values

If you’re unsure about your core values, try this exercise:

  1. What makes someone a good person?
    • List traits you admire in others—these often reflect your values.
  2. Who do you admire and why?
    • The qualities you admire are often the values you wish you embodied more.
  3. Who do you envy and why?
    • Envy often points to values you’re not living up to. If you envy someone’s success, ask what behaviors led them there.
  4. Who do you hate and why?
    • The behaviors you despise in others often reveal the values most important to you.

From your answers, extract keywords that represent values, like courage, honesty, respect, responsibility. Then, refine them into a short list of 5-10 core values.

How to Live by Your Core Values

Once you’ve identified your values, define them clearly. For example:

  • Honesty: Speak your mind and do what you think is right.
  • Courage: Choose the uncomfortable option.
  • Responsibility: Own your actions and their consequences.

Then, put them into practice daily. Choose one value per day to focus on, journal about your experiences, and refine your definitions over time.

Core Values in Different Areas of Life

1. Business & Career

Some of the most powerful values in the workplace include:

  • Responsibility: No one will care about your career as much as you do—own it.
  • Honesty: Integrity builds long-term success, even if it slows short-term gains.
  • Generosity: Focus on serving others, whether clients, employees, or colleagues.
  • Patience & Determination: Success takes time—persevere through setbacks.
  • Assertiveness: Protect your work, your time, and your vision.

2. Relationships

Strong relationships are built on:

  • Honesty: Be transparent—radical honesty prevents misunderstandings and resentment.
  • Curiosity: Seek to understand your partner, friends, and family on a deep level.
  • Respect: Treat others as you want to be treated.
  • Courage: Address difficult topics rather than avoiding conflict.
  • Presence: Be fully engaged with loved ones instead of distracted by work or technology.

3. Leadership

Great leaders embody:

  • Responsibility: A leader owns their actions and guides others effectively.
  • Courage: Take risks and lead by example.
  • Humility: Acknowledge that you don’t have all the answers—stay open to learning.
  • Assertiveness: Protect your team from harm, both internally and externally.
  • Service: True leadership is about serving, not controlling.
  • Ruthlessness: Set clear boundaries and remove toxic influences when necessary.

Final Thoughts

Living with integrity isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistently making decisions aligned with your core values. The more you live with integrity, the more confidence you build, and the better your life becomes.
