Evolving Desire: Why We’re Never Fully Satisfied

Daily Dose of Integrity

Human beings are wired for dissatisfaction. In fact, it’s one of the main factors that contributed to our successful evolution on this planet—nothing is ever quite good enough for us.

We always want more.

We always want things to be better.

What we used to be excited about, we now expect and feel entitled to. And that’s just the way we’re wired; it’s the human psyche.

It keeps us going.

It means our ancestors didn’t stop at one berry bush and say, ‘I’ll just sit here forever.’ They thought, ‘Are there better berries around the corner?’ and that kept them alive. If they stayed at one berry bush, they would die.

You have this wiring too, so even if you get everything you’ve ever wanted, it’s only a matter of weeks before you become unsatisfied with it. It’s impossible to stay comfortable, familiar, and satisfied for a consistent period of time—and even if it were possible, entropy would erode it anyway.
