Commitment vs Promise: How to Tell if Your Relationship Is Built to Last
Most people think they know what commitment means. They don’t.
They confuse promises with commitment, romance with loyalty, and emotional “highs” with long-term compatibility. And because of that, they create fragile relationships — the kind that crack under pressure because they’re built on future fantasies rather than present behavior.
Let’s strip all that away and get clear about what commitment really is, why most people misunderstand it, and how to tell whether you’re in a temporary rough patch… or something that genuinely needs to end.
Commitment vs Promise: Why They Are Not the Same Thing
A promise is simple:
“I will do this later.”
A commitment is entirely different:
“I’m doing this right now.”
Commitment has presence. Weight. Real-time behavior behind it. If I say I’m committed to my marriage, that means that in this moment I’m acting like a husband — listening, planning, engaging, showing up — not vaguely planning to behave like one “in the future.”
People love promises because they feel good:
“I’ll love you forever.”
“We’ll go on a holiday one day.”
“I’m going to change.”
Promises give dopamine. They get applause. But they don’t actually mean anything.
Commitment is what you do today — not what you say about tomorrow.
Real Commitment Looks Like Presence
Take a simple example.
If I’m playing with my daughter and half-scrolling my phone, that’s not commitment. That’s a promise disguised as parenting: “I’m kind of here, but not really.”
Commitment looks like:
This is the last time we’ll ever get this exact moment together. I’m fully in.
It’s the same with romantic partnerships. You can’t say you’re committed if your behavior contradicts it:
being distracted
staying half-in, half-out
avoiding long-term planning
“seeing how things go”
keeping one foot out the door
- exploring other romantic options
Commitment means acting like someone who plans to stay — not saying you plan to stay someday.
Loyalty: The Most Misunderstood Relationship Value
Loyalty gets romanticized, but most people practice the worst possible version of it: blind loyalty.
Blind loyalty says:
“I’ll stay no matter what you become.”
“I’m obligated to stay even if everything has changed.”
“I made a promise once, therefore I must suffer forever.”
You cannot be loyal to a person who no longer exists.
People change — beliefs, values, personality, mental health, behavior. The person you met years ago is not the exact same human standing in front of you now. They might change gradually, or dramatically, or reveal things you didn’t see in the beginning.
Real loyalty acknowledges that change and has conditions:
I’ll stay as long as we’re still the same values-based match.
I’ll stay as long as you’re still the person I committed to — not a completely different version of you.
Even marriage vows get this wrong. “I’ll love you forever no matter what” is not loyalty — it’s hope-based fantasy.
Why Commitment Is a Bridge (Not a Permanent High)
Early in my relationship, I couldn’t understand long-term marriage. How do couples stay together for decades? Do they just magically love each other every day?
A friend of mine — married 15 years at the time — told me something I’ve never forgotten:
“Sometimes we don’t love each other. Sometimes we can’t stand each other. Commitment is the bridge that gets us through those valleys.”
This was a revelation. He wasn’t saying love disappears permanently, he was saying love fluctuates, just like every emotion we have.
And the couples who survive aren’t the ones who stay in love 24/7… they’re the ones who stay committed even when love is temporarily missing.
I’ve now lived my own version of this – my wife and I have had some strains on our relationship which dimmed the love temporarily:
immigration stress
sleepless nights with a newborn
periods of depression
external chaos with in-laws
emotional exhaustion
seasons of distance and disconnect
None of those were signs the relationship was bad. They were signs we were human.
Why You Can’t Expect Life (or Love) to Feel Good All the Time
One of the biggest relationship delusions is this:
“If it feels bad, it must be wrong.”
This is childish. Literally — it’s the logic of a child.
Nothing meaningful feels good all the time:
your favorite hobby
your dream job
your fitness routine
your closest friendships
your marriage
even your own identity
The brain cannot maintain constant emotional highs. It normalizes everything — even the best things — and resets.
So a relationship that once felt electric will eventually feel familiar. Not bad. Not boring. Just… normal.
And people misinterpret this normality as a “loss of love.”
So When Is It a Rough Patch… And When Is It Time to Break Up?
This is where loyalty and commitment become very practical.
There are two kinds of valleys:
1. Healthy Valleys
These are normal dips caused by:
life stress
fatigue
new responsibilities
loss of novelty
mental health seasons
routine
external circumstances
temporary emotional or physical distance
If the values of the relationship are intact — respect, honesty, kindness, effort — then this is simply a valley to walk through.
Commitment bridges you over until feelings return.
2. Unhealthy Valleys (Red Flags)
These are caused by significant negative changes in:
values
behavior (especially treatment of each other)
character
integrity
respect
safety
honesty
compatibility
If the person has become someone different from who you originally committed to, and the core values no longer match, then this is not a valley — it’s a misalignment.
Commitment cannot fix that. It’s not meant to.
When relationships reach a point of no return, navigating the legal complexities often becomes a primary concern. The emotional toll of separation can be immense, making clearheaded decision-making challenging. Seeking advice from a divorce lawyer early in the process can help clarify rights and obligations, ensuring a smoother transition. This professional guidance allows individuals to understand their options and focus on rebuilding their lives, even when facing difficult circumstances.
Stop Signing Up For Who You Think They Will Become
A disastrous version of loyalty is this:
“I’m committing to you… under the condition that you improve.”
This is not commitment. This is manipulation dressed as hope.
When you commit, you commit to:
their flaws as they are
their personality as it is
their emotional maturity as it is
their strengths as they are
their habits as they currently exist
Any improvement beyond that is a bonus — not a requirement.
If you need them to change in order to stay, then you’re already in the wrong relationship.
Commitment Requires Present-Moment Honesty
Instead of promising forever, a healthier approach is:
“As long as we are both acting with integrity toward each other, I will stay fully engaged.”
Not as poetic, but much more truthful. Commitment is not time-based — it’s values-based.
It’s not:
“I’ll stay until death no matter what.”
It is:
“I’ll likely stay so long as we both keep showing up as the people we are today, with the values we share.”
Why Some People Leave Too Early… and Others Stay Too Long
People who struggle with commitment usually fall into one of two traps:
1. The Escapists
These people use valleys as an excuse to leave, especially when novelty appears elsewhere:
a new crush
an exciting coworker
someone who triggers dopamine
someone who offers what their partner currently can’t
the thrill of “newness”
If you jump ship whenever the feelings dip, you’ll never experience deep intimacy.
Ever.
2. The Hopefuls
These people stay far too long:
in abusive dynamics
with addiction issues
in chronically disrespectful relationships
with partners who violate values
in one-sided arrangements
in relationships where they’re no longer safe
hoping the other person “changes back”
Blind loyalty ruins lives.
Commitment Means Doing What’s Right, Not What Feels Good
Ultimately, commitment is a kind of discipline.
Just like working out:
you won’t always feel like doing it
but the long-term rewards are worth it
and you can’t outsource the effort
and sometimes it just sucks
You don’t need to “feel like it” to know it’s good for you.
Relationships work the same way.
The Real Question You Need to Ask Yourself
The true measure of commitment isn’t:
How good does this feel?
How exciting is this right now?
How often am I in a high?
How does it compare to someone new?
The real question is:
Is this a values-aligned partnership where both people show up with integrity — even in the valleys?
If the answer is yes, stay.
If the answer is no, rethink everything.
From “Nice Guy” to Authentic and Confident in 90 Days
Being “nice” still isn’t working, is it?
You try to please everyone – partner, boss, friends, kids – and then secretly resent them for holding you back, even though you know it’s really your lack of boundaries and assertiveness. Relationships feel tense or flat. Your job pays the bills but feels like a soul‑draining compromise.
You censor what you really think and feel, swallow frustration, and end up with resentment, anxiety, and occasional bursts of anger that scare you. You worry that one day you’ll either explode at someone you love or collapse into anxious depression and give up on yourself.
You lie awake wondering if you’re destined to always be the “nice guy” who’s never truly respected.
That’s exactly where many of my clients started. Now they speak their minds calmly on the spot, stand up to high‑status people without blinking, build deep, honest relationships, and live according to their values rather than guilt and fear.
This coaching offer is designed to help you make that same shift with a clear, concrete roadmap… and without any high-pressure sales calls.
The Outcome
In the next 90 days, you’ll build the foundations of unshakeable integrity and social confidence so you can speak your mind, set firm boundaries, and stop people‑pleasing – without destroying your relationships or reputation.
By the end of this program, you will:
✅Have a clear personal code of values and standards so you know exactly what “living with integrity” means in practical, everyday decisions.
✅Be able to say what you really think and feel – even when it’s uncomfortable – in your relationship, at work, and with friends, without panicking about what others think.
✅Establish and enforce healthy boundaries so people stop walking over you, and you stop over‑delivering, over‑apologising, and over‑explaining.
✅Replace guilt, shame, and anxiety with grounded self‑respect, so you feel worthy of the life you actually want rather than settling.
The Mentorship Roadmap (3 phases)
Here’s exactly how we’ll create those results, step by step.
Phase 1 – Integrity Blueprint: Who you really are
- We map out your current Nice Guy patterns: people‑pleasing, conflict avoidance, dishonesty, over‑giving, sexual shame, and hidden resentment.
- You define your core values and non‑negotiable standards – your Integrity Blueprint – so you finally know what “being a good man” means for you, not for everyone else.
- You get simple, real‑life exercises to start acting in alignment with this blueprint immediately (micro honesty, small confrontations, tiny acts of self‑respect).
✅Result of Phase 1: You stop feeling confused and start feeling clear – you know what the “right thing” is in tough situations, and have a blueprint to guide your behaviour.
Phase 2 – Courage and Communication: Saying what needs to be said
- You learn practical communication tools to speak your mind respectfully: honest disclosures, clean confrontations, boundary statements, and “no” without guilt.
- We prepare and debrief real conversations from your life (partner, boss, family), so you’re not just learning theory – you’re dealing with real situations and upgrading them.
- You gradually face emotionally difficult situations – disagreements, criticism, saying “no” – in a controlled way that builds confidence rather than overwhelming you.
✅Result of Phase 2: You can have uncomfortable conversations without panicking, freezing, or lashing out. People start to see you as calm, honest, and respectable instead of “nice but weak”.
Phase 3 – Lifestyle Integration: Living as a confident, respected man
- We redesign your daily routines, relationship habits, and social life to match your Integrity Blueprint: how you work, rest, connect, and pursue goals.
- You create a realistic, sustainable action plan for the next 6–12 months so that the changes stick instead of fading once coaching ends.
- We address the predictable resistance – from your own fear as well as from other people – and install strategies so you don’t relapse into old Nice Guy habits when things get tough.
✅Result of Phase 3: You’re no longer “doing a program”; you’ve become a different kind of man – one who leads with integrity, stands his ground, and builds relationships based on honesty instead of approval‑seeking.

Testimonials
You can read independent reviews from my coaching clients on Google here
Typical experiences for my clients (no promises – this is just what happened for them):
▶️Andy went from catastrophizing all the time about what his workmates and neighbours thought of him, to simply no longer caring about what anyone thought of him. Ever. This allowed him to finally start a side-hustle that he’d wanted to do for decades.
▶️Daniel cheated on his wife. She was about to divorce him. We repaired his marriage by learning to express his emotions clearly, set boundaries, and get over his fear of missing out. Now they’re stronger than ever before. And I helped him start his own business.
▶️Simon was a 30 year old virgin who could only get into the friendzone. He’s now married with two children, and is totally honest in the relationship.
▶️Tony was devastated after his wife of 8 years suddenly left him for another man after getting sick of his people pleasing. Now he’s travelling the world and dating amazing women that he once thought were out of his league. The people pleasing has stopped.
▶️Ian was terrified of commitment of any kind because deep down he thought he wasn’t good enough. He’s now married and expecting his first child, and he found the courage to go all in on his own business.
▶️Vince was constantly getting into pointless conflicts with his wife, and losing her respect. Now they’re a solid team, and she looks up to him as a man who can maintain boundaries without losing control.
▶️Jerry was still living at home in his late 20s, absolutely dominated by his controlling parents. His work colleagues bullied and controlled him too. He’s now living on his own, can approach and connect with beautiful women without fear, and is respected and known as someone you do not mess with at work.

FAQ
Who is this coaching really for, and how do I know if I’m a good fit?
The best fit for this program is a man who identifies as being Mr Nice Guy and/or a people pleaser, is dedicated to becoming more confident and authentic, and is willing to get uncomfortable trying some new behaviours.
What specific changes or results can I realistically expect in 90 days?
This obviously depends on your courage and what kind of trauma etc. holds you back, but you can reasonably expect to figure out your Nice Guy sabotaging beliefs and behaviours, fix the worst of them, feel confidence growing, know what your Core Values are and how to live by them, and learn how to create healthy relationships within 90 days. After that it’s just practice and repetition.
How is this different from therapy, books, or free confidence content online?
I will get inside your head for your specific needs, challenges and goals. I’m like a mental mechanic, I will help you pull yourself apart and put it all back together to function much more effectively. You can try doing this on your own too, just expect it to take years instead of months due to being unable to see your own blind spots.
What happens after I sign up – what’s the onboarding and session process like without a sales call?
After you’ve enrolled, you’ll be sent a link to book in your first session and you’ll receive an email with all links, bonuses and other information needed. During our first session the rest will be made clear. I have times available for anywhere in the world, and you can contact me if there’s an issue with finding a good time – we’ll make something work.
How much time per week will this require, and can it work with my job/family schedule?
Apart from the weekly coaching session, our work will be designed to integrate with your life. Your “homework” tasks will involve real-life situations, not extra work on top of your everyday activities. You already have enough time.
What if I do the work but don’t get results – do you have any kind of guarantee or safety net?
I can’t guarantee that you’ll do the work, I can only guarantee that I will deliver expert coaching built on a solid foundation of formal education, practical training, and decades of experience. I can guarantee that I have implemented all of this into my own life for incredible results. I can guarantee that nearly all of my clients who have courageously taken action have achieved results above and beyond their expectations. If you have a history of investing without doing the work, however, this is not for you.
How confidential are our sessions and messages, especially around sensitive topics like sex, shame, or trauma?
Highly confidential. The information won’t be shared with anyone without your permission. Calls are recorded for you, but only you and I will have access to the recordings.
What is your coaching style and philosophy – will I resonate with your direct, integrity‑based approach?
My style is straight to the point. I won’t be hard on you, but I will be honest. I will focus on pointing out the contradictions in your beliefs, and help you to take responsibility for your actions. I won’t allow you to play the victim and blame others for your choices or results. If you don’t want to take full responsibility for your life, I can’t help you.
What happens after the 90 days – can I continue, join a community, or move into more advanced coaching?
Some of my clients continue with more advanced coaching because they want to become insanely confident. Many of my clients continue with light-touch maintenance coaching (e.g. one session per month) to make sure they keep their progress going. Others continue with the Brojo community, using the courses and my books to stay on track. And some clients simply don’t need me at all any more and go off on their own.
