3% of the population (estimated) are psychopaths – people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, or other highly psychopathic conditions. They are manipulative, ruthless and often quite harmful. You will encounter one eventually, so let’s talk about how to use powerful honesty to protect yourself from them (and anyone being a bit selfish).
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) describes a cluster of traits including grandiosity, self-centredness, manipulation, psychopathy, superficiality (“glibness”) and patterns of unhealthy relationships. You are likely to encounter such a person many times in your life. And when you do, they will subject you to manipulation, usually to a level that far surpasses the average person. They are clever, subtle, camoflaged, and very good at influencing people.
Most people believe that being honest with such a person is a mistake. One BROJO member sent in a question after reading my book The Naked Truth – will honesty make them more susceptible to manipulation from narcissists? Will it lead them to experience narcissistic abuse syndrome?
Most people, fearing honesty, make the mistake of trying to outsmart the narcissist, which is like a chess newbie trying to outwit a grandmaster. Psychopaths are far better at manipulating you than you are at outsmarting them, so it’s a lost battle before it even begins.
In the above video, I talk about using Powerful Honesty to protect yourself from all manner of psychopaths, while never having to know any manipulation strategies yourself.
