This is an excerpt from my course: Overcoming Fear of Rejection… Permanently!
Understanding Rejection: Why You Shouldn’t Take It Personally
Before you let someone’s opinion affect you, it’s crucial to consider who they are and what their opinion means to you. One of the main reasons we take rejection personally is our automatic assumption that the person rejecting us is a reliable judge of our worth. But what if that assumption is flawed?
The Mental Health Facility Thought Experiment
Imagine you’re in a mental health facility, surrounded by individuals with severe mental disorders. One patient, who suffers from schizophrenia, approaches you and says, “I don’t like you because the voices in my head tell me you’re the devil.” Would you take this personally? Would this affect your self-worth?
Most likely, your immediate reaction would be to dismiss it. You’d recognize that the person’s judgment is a result of their mental condition, not a valid reflection of your character. This feedback wouldn’t sway your perception of yourself because you understand it’s rooted in their disorder.
Why Do We Take Others Seriously?
This extreme example raises an important question: why do we value the opinions of others who are not in mental institutions, even when their behavior is cruel or disrespectful? Why do we assume their feedback is more valid?

The Traits of Truly Confident People
Consider what defines a truly confident person—someone with deep inner self-worth. These individuals are honest, compassionate, courageous, responsible, and respectful. They possess integrity, treat others with kindness, and love themselves unconditionally.
Now, think about the likelihood of such a person engaging in harmful behaviors like gossiping, bullying, or insulting others. Research and psychological studies suggest that confident people have no need to harm others. Their actions are rooted in self-assurance, not insecurity.
The Insecurity of Cruelty
If someone treats you poorly, it’s a clear sign of their insecurity. Confident individuals do not engage in cruelty unless it’s in self-defense. Therefore, anyone who rejects you harshly, mocks you, or bullies you is revealing their own lack of confidence.
Reassessing Validity
Returning to our mental health facility thought experiment, the patient’s judgment is easily dismissed because it stems from a mental disorder. Similarly, individuals who treat you cruelly are driven by their own emotional or mental struggles. Their feedback is not about you; it’s about their insecurities.
Whose Feedback Matters?
The only feedback worth considering comes from confident people who genuinely care about you and have your best interests at heart. Their opinions are given from a place of healthy self-worth and are aimed at helping you grow.
Everyone else, especially those who are unkind or disrespectful, should be regarded as irrelevant as the schizophrenic patient in our example. Their words are merely reflections of their internal struggles, not accurate assessments of your character.
Conclusion
Next time someone’s behavior upsets you, remember: their cruelty is evidence of their insecurity. Their opinion is not a valid reflection of your worth. Focus on feedback from those who genuinely care and possess true confidence. Disregard the rest, knowing it has nothing to do with you.
