Confidence Secrets from Psychopaths: What Nice Guys Can Learn

Challenging Your Beliefs: The Truth About Confidence, Fear, and Self-Interest

In this post, I want to break down some of the core beliefs we’ve challenged in this course. A lot of what you’ve been told about being a “good” person—pleasing others, avoiding conflict, seeking approval—is actually holding you back.

Now, let me be clear: I’m not advocating for manipulation, cruelty, or selfishness in the traditional sense. But I am suggesting that adopting certain psychopathic traits—strategically—can help you overcome even worse traits: inauthenticity and people-pleasing.

Let’s take a look at some of the most deeply ingrained beliefs that might be keeping you stuck.

Does People-Pleasing Even Work?

Chances are, pleasing others has been your go-to strategy for getting through life. But take a second to ask yourself: How’s that working out? Are the people you’ve bent over backward for actually pleased? Are you deeply satisfied with your life? Do you look at all areas of your life and think, I’m crushing it?

If pleasing others is really the best way to operate, why is it so miserable? Why does it leave you exhausted, resentful, and unfulfilled? And if psychopathy—being less emotionally reactive, more assertive, and more self-focused—is so terrible, why do psychopaths generally enjoy their lives more than the rest of us?

Maybe, just maybe, they know something we don’t.

Fear Doesn’t Keep You Safe

One of the biggest lies we’re fed is that being fearful protects us. That if we’re cautious, avoid confrontation, and play it safe, we’ll be secure.

That’s complete nonsense.

I used to work with violent offenders. You know what kind of people they targeted? Fearful ones. They didn’t want a challenge; they wanted easy prey. Fear doesn’t keep you safe—it makes you a target.

Think about it like riding a bike. If you go too slow, you’re more likely to fall over. Hesitation increases your risk. The same applies to everything—driving, surfing, snowboarding. Being fearful and hesitant actually puts you in greater danger. The safest way to go through life is to lean in and trust yourself.

Overthinking is Useless

How many times have you spent hours analyzing something new, thinking through every possible outcome, only to take no action?

Here’s the truth: if something is new to you, you have no relevant experience to think through. Your thoughts are based on guesswork, not knowledge. And if you do have experience, you don’t need to think much—you can just trust your instincts.

At no point is overthinking useful. The best approach is to take your best guess, act on it, and learn from the results. Trial and error beats analysis paralysis every single time.

Seeking Approval is a Trap

We’ve all been conditioned to believe we need validation from others. That we need social proof. That being seen as “good” is the key to success.

But here’s something to consider: the most desperate people-pleasers are often the most selfish, narcissistic, and manipulative individuals. They’re not doing good for the sake of others—they’re doing it to control how people see them. Meanwhile, the truly altruistic people, the ones who actually make the world a better place, rarely conform. They’re not polite or eager to fit in. They don’t care about being liked.

The best decisions for your life will come from your judgment—not from what others think you should do. People’s opinions are based on their own preferences, biases, and self-interest. Why would you let that dictate your choices?

Putting Yourself First Isn’t Selfish

If you’ve ever been on a plane, you’ve heard the safety instructions: put on your oxygen mask before helping others. Why? Because if you pass out, you’re useless to the person next to you.

Life works the same way. If you don’t put yourself first, your “help” to others is weak, compromised, and ultimately harmful. When you’re burnt out, resentful, or insecure, what kind of support can you really offer?

Most of what people get from you isn’t your direct help—it’s your example. The best way to serve others isn’t to sacrifice yourself for them; it’s to show them how to live well. Give them something to aspire to.

Taking care of yourself is not selfish—it’s one of the most altruistic things you can do.

Are Psychopaths Really the Villains?

Society paints psychopaths as monsters, but that’s just a Hollywood stereotype. Sure, some are dangerous, but so are people-pleasers. So are those who blindly conform to expectations, who suppress themselves to fit in, who live lives dictated by fear.

Psychopaths, at their core, have confidence, resilience, and emotional detachment. They’re not weighed down by social conditioning. They don’t waste time overthinking. They act. And while we don’t want to adopt all their traits, there’s a lot we can learn from them.

The Middle Ground: Taking What Works

The goal isn’t to become a full-blown psychopath—it’s to extract the useful traits and apply them strategically. It’s about challenging beliefs that don’t serve you, shedding the conditioning that keeps you weak, and embracing the confidence and courage that allow you to thrive.

Let go of the lies you’ve been told. Let go of the idea that self-confidence is arrogance, that prioritizing yourself is selfish, that fear keeps you safe.

Instead, take what actually works. Live with boldness. Trust yourself. And give others the best version of you—not the exhausted, approval-seeking, fearful version.

That’s what this journey is really about.
