The Old Stereotype
It’s basically a well-established “fact” that women are more emotional than men. This seems to mean that women feel emotions more frequently and more intensely, and that their behaviour is more dictated by emotion than men.
Men are supposedly more “rational”, having less emotions and feeling them less intensely than women, and making decisions based on logic and reason without much consideration of feelings.
Today, I’d like to call bullshit on this long-standing trope. In fact, I think the truth is the opposite: men are the more emotional gender!
Measuring Emotions
To settle this debate, we must first agree on how to measure emotionality. It’s a difficult thing to measure, because emotions can be suppressed, in that a person can be deeply emotional without displaying outward signs of it. So just observing people wouldn’t be very accurate.
And asking them is unlikely to provide much information, because people are rarely honest about their in-the-moment feelings unless they are feeling “fine” or are the rare sort of person who has no emotional shame.
However, there are signs of emotionality that can be measured. And when the question is who is MORE emotional, then we can narrow our search to evidence of strong intense emotions.
Intense anger? Let’s look at violence statistics.
Intense sadness? Let’s look at depression and suicide rates.
Intense stress? Let’s look at who has the most heart attacks and dies earlier.
Intense happiness? Let’s look at who lives longer and is statistically healthier.
Are you already starting to form a picture???
Men Have the Worst Stats
Men are much more violent than women, indicating an inability to handle anger, frustration and rage. Men are 4x more likely to kill themselves than women, indicating they are more severely affected by depression and general sadness. Men have much higher rates of heart disease and heart attacks, and die earlier than women, indiciating that men are more affected by stress than women.
The only emotion where women seem to be more represented than men is happiness and enjoyment of life!
If women are “more emotional”, why are men the ones dominating the stats for every measure of quality of life that is directly related to experiencing and processing emotions?
There’s only one logical answer: men are more affected by emotion than women are. This means men must feel emotions more often or more intensely than women, or both!
But Why Do Women Appear “Emotional”?
I believe this stereotype is caused by a simple failure of observation. Women are better able to express feelings in a healthy way – to “get them out” you might say – so you are more likely to see obvious emotions when observing a woman.
But if you looked closely and/or had a bit of psychology training, then observing men would show they too are constantly experiencing emotions. The signs are more subtle because most men are less expressive about their feelings.
It’s in the bags under their eyes from failing to deal with stress. They way they look down and say “Fine, sound good” when they are actually feeling disagreement. It’s the way they scream at their football team to release a week’s worth of pent up anger. It’s the way they binge-drink, crack jokes to relieve tension, and lose themselves in practical projects or mindless social media scrolling.
It’s show through their avoidance.
It’s rarely a teenage girl who punches a hole in the wall, but teen boys frequently do. Men are more likely to be drug addicts. Men get performance anxiety in the bedroom with such intensity that their blood cannot flow properly.
Men have often mastered the art of suppressing their feelings and controlling their expressions, and this gives the average layman the impression that there are no emotions happening beneath the surface.
Ever notice how a typical woman has what men will often call “mood swings”? One minute she’s happy, the next sad, the next angry, and so on. This is actually a sign that her emotions are less intense, because if they were deep and strong she wouldn’t be able to switch so easily.
Frankly speaking, women are like toddlers sometimes, swinging from full tantrum to laughing happily as if nothing happened. They process emotions so successfully that they are far less likely to get stuck in them.
Compare that to men.
Men Struggle With Emotions
If I get fully angry, it takes me hours to recover. If I get sad, it’s pretty much impossible to cheer me up. I can go for years feeling highly stressed or anxious. And I think other men are the same. Once a man gets into a mood, it takes a Panzer tank to pull him out.
This actually makes men appear more “stable”. If a guy is angry/stressed all the time for many years, you won’t see much fluctuation. This doesn’t mean he’s “less” emotional, it just means he’s stuck in emotional holes for extremely long periods of time. This must surely meet the definition of “more” emotional?
Unlike women, men are untrained in the art of expressing feelings. So instead we bottle them up. They don’t go anywhere, they just rot and fester and compound in our psyche and in our body.
Our cortisol levels go up. We develop low-level depression. We slowly lose the ability to enjoy life, becoming stressed, irritable, and unenthusiastic about participating in everyday things.
